It has been running well for me on my two computers. It does scan faster and has no issues with other applications that I am using.

    Best,
    Jerry

Just to follow up on this one.

Having logged the Help Desk call, I've spent every evening this week working with one of Nick's developers to resolve the problem, which appeared to be down to my PC having an unusual MFT structure.

I now have a fixed version and await v4.1 when I will be able to switch program updates back on.

I'd just like to say thanks to Nick and his team for the excellent support and hard work put in to resolve the problem.

I hope the scanning time has indeed improved, because at over an hour SAS 3.9 had by far the slowest full scan of any antimalware I have ever run. That's why I don't use it.

Spy Sweeper takes less than 15 minutes. Spybot takes about the same, but I don't have that much faith in it. NIS 2007 with AV and AS takes about a half hour, as does AVG. I can't remember exactly how long Windows Defender and Ad-Aware took, as I seldom use either.

I don't necessarily buy the argument that SAS scans any 'deeper' than these apps either. I know that it never detected any malware on my machine.

Is the constant CPU spike going to be addressed when using real time mode?

I'm using SAS 4 Pro on Vista and a full scan of C:\ (roughly 30 gigs of assorted programs and data) takes about 30 minutes. I had previously used SAS 3.9 Free and I can say that the scan time using 4.0 is about half.

Version 4.0 typically cuts the scan time by almost 50% over 3.9, depending on the file structure. As far as "not buying the argument" as to the scanning, it's good nothing is found on your system - I don't think you want "something" found :)

You are more than welcome - we really appreciate users, such as yourself, that actually take the time to work with us - some of these non-typical things are very hard to track down without an actual system that shows the problem. We appreciate you taking your valuable time to work with us!

Just some observations from yet another perspective and SAS user.

Is file matching methods for potential Risks such as comparisons via MD5 checksums and the like or simple database name comparisons comprise or make up the basic elements of these file scans? I'm sure other elements/code are involved but you don't need to detail those arrangements for obvious reasons.

File scanning always takes some degreee of time due in part if nothing else to the huge numbers of them let alone alternative extensions.

I have to applaud SAS yet again with this latest release, the registry scan is especially faster as well as files probing and i think what really sets SAS apart from any others in a big way, as fcutdat has driven the point home time and again in countless numbers of his posts, is IMHO the very most important of all, and that is REMOVALS!!!

The most aggressive of malware is been designed to create maximum difficulty to automatically remove and especially when it comes to rootkits or rootkit-type afflictions that rely on multiple supporting cast like hidden dll's or drivers and the like.

This is where SAS from my experiences with it really shines.

It's one thing to detect risks, and a whole other matter entirely to remove them enough that they no longer can either re-spawn or pose any problem later.

I seen AS's that sure enough alerted and even located malware, but when the time came to affect a removal, they choked and were rendered for all purposes, totally aimless to do anything more.

    One Last Compliment. Fantastic!!!

PS: I recently been researching an oldie but goodie malware named BookedSpace, i'll give you one clue what one program found a ton of registry entries leftover as well as an .ini supporting file.

No, of course I don't want SAS to find something, but on the other hand if it did find a piece of malware that the other apps had missed, the find would help to justify the long scan times. I have to admit that I was somewhat impressed by AVG AS when it turned up a tracking cookie in a hidden system folder that none of the other apps caught. That's about the worst malware I found in quite some time.

So, I'm very happy with SAS 4.0. My only annoyance is the UAC prompt that Vista springs on me every time SAS 4.0 wants to update.

Happy to help SAS Team in testing version 4.1.

I downloaded the SAS 4.0 free version and ran a full scan. It took 38 minutes, which is indeed about 50% faster than the 3.9 version I had tried. Nothing found, which is good news.

It's still about twice as long for a full scan as Spy Sweeper though.

Thank you to SAS for providing this free version. By the way, both of these AS apps are on the short list of recommendations on the Spyware Warrior site.

I just started SuperAntiSpware and got a popup saying there was an update. So, I updated and it said it had successfully updated. But then when it started, I got another popup saying there was an update. I thought it would update internally? It doesn't. So, do I need to uninstall the 3.9 version first?

If you are refering to the pop up in the right bottom corner, that is a program update, not definitions.Open the program, preferences > updates > check for updates. The latest is 4.0.1154.No need to uninstall previous version

Yes, I know it is a program update. My point is that I cannot get this program update. It says it has updated (after I run the installer) to 4.0.1 but then it shows 3.9.
