    Hi oddworld..and Mike

After a bit more looking about, I agree with you that Auto Liveupdate is not working properly. Try to turn it off in any duration or permanently simply doesn't work via Settings. I can verify this with the Windows Event Viewer under Application. While using Control Panel to turn it on/off will work and register Auto LiveUpdate Scheduler activities in the Event Viewer, nothing is shown when it's set to OFF via Settings, and it stays enabled.

Reinstallation didn't help. So my only issue is turning Auto Update OFF via Settings. I don't have issues with Interactive/Express options.

I have NAV 2007 but looks like NIS 2008 is the same.
Is this a known issue and any remedy for it, Mike?
    Thanks.

I've got NIS 2008 installed on a Vista notebook, and an XP desktop, and I can't get the interactive mode to function from the main screen on either. I didn't have this problem on the XP machine when I had NIS 2007 installed. I'm beginning to wonder if this is a glitch with NIS 2008, unless somebody can confirm that it works for them.

oddworld, thanks for the tip....I followed this advice, and I think it's probably the best solution I'm going to get.

Yes, I think this is the best it's going to get.

I also installed NIS 2008 and on one of my other systems yesterday and it does the same exact thing as it does here.

So I don't think uninstalling and reinstalling is going to make any difference.

Maybe Mike can let us know if the interactive mode pops up when he clicks the Run Live Update from his NIS 2008 user interface?

    Hi oddworld and cloudroft,

The instructions that I had presented to you both are correct and should have allowed the Interactive Mode of LiveUpdate to function properly for Norton Internet Security 2008.

Since it does not seem to have resolved your issue, I would like to escalate your case to an engineer here at Symantec.

Please check your PM box for instructions.

    Thank you for your patience.

    Mike

Here is the Final word on this problem:

Now to the issue, from the program interface there is no way to make the live update program run like the previous versions. The decision was made that running in this new version was better. So the only way to get your interactive interface is to run the LUALL from the run line or to create a shortcut on you desktop and point it to the LUALL program and that should let you see the interface your looking for. I hope that will answer all of your questions on this issue.

I will look forward to your reply.

    Thank You.

I want to thank Michael York and Thom Jackson from Symantec for all their fine & professional help with this problem.

    Hi oddworld,

I'm glad to hear that Thom was able to assist you further and clarify the specifics of the new LiveUpdate process. I'm also glad that I was able to contribute. I appreciate you posting the solution as well.

    Take care,
    Mike

oddworld, thanks for posting the answer to this issue, as I've yet to be contacted by anyone from Symantec.....but now it's not necessary.

Sounds like BS to me. The excuses are for the gullible. "It's better this way." Yeah right.
Answer me this. Why would Mike had people following all these instructions even resort to re-installation, when supposedly the problem is an issue known by a person with a supposedly higher IQ.

I'm guessing that Mike, in whatever his capacity is at Symantec, wasn't aware that you couldn't run LiveUpdate in the interactive mode from the gui in NIS 2008. He was willing to help us by contacting someone at Symantec who has expertise with NIS 2008. I really doubt this has anything to do with IQ. I for one, appreciate Mike taking the time to occasionally drop by these forums and offer his assistance.

I am also having a problem with Live Update ( AntiVirus 2008 ) always running in express mode and refusing to run interactively, however: I bought a 3-system pack from Staples. On one computer, Live Update runs interactively just fine. On a second one (both XP Pro), it will run only in Express mode. Makes me think that the "only solution" discussed here - turning off Automatic Live Update and running LUALL manually might be just one solution. I've compared all the relevant checkboxes in AntiVirus-Options-Live Update, and in the Symantec Live Update applet -- they match exactly on both systems. Hmmm ...

A follow-up. Now I've installed Norton Anitvirus 2008 on a total of three XP-Pro systems -- all from the same Staples 3-user CD. Two of the systems run Live Update interactively; one insists on running only in express mode. There is, therefore, a way to have Live Update operate interactively -- I just need some help finding out how to do it.

Same issue here. NIS 2008 on Vista 32-bit.

I just assumed they wanted to put a simpler face on Live Update for most users.

If I need to run the Interactive Live Update, which I do prefer, I can run it manually.

It would be nice to find out whether the behaviour can be changed to default to Interactive Mode from within NIS 2008, so keep up the good work.

My apologies to Symantec and to those who took the time to read my problems here. I was misled by this thread of claims that Symantec had deliberately removed interactive mode from Live Update. (It wasn't something that would have surprised me.)

In fact, after following a Symantec tech support message to uninstall Live Update (only -- nothing else, and I have a lot of Symantec software), and reinstalling it, using a download of the latest version, Live Update works just fine in Interactive Mode. -Rob

I have this same problem. I just got a new computer with NIS 2008 already loaded. My problem is that I cannot get the Automatic Live Update to respond to me clicking on it and trying to make it say yes. Went into the settings, clicked on automatic, came back and it still won't work. I tried your solution about Intelligent Updater. It was installed okay, but came back to NIS settings and task and have the same problem. Any more ideas? This is driving me nuts. I get no help from technicians. Chat room last night. He took control of the computer and made some changes, had to reboot and when I came back, I never heard from them again. I waited over 30 minutes. Never got a message that I was in the queue. Very poor customer service. Anyway, I need help, please. Thanks.

Well, that's not BS at all... And if you are asking why this change was made? Well, it was made with one and exactly one goal only - in order to hide the obnoxious bugs and inefficiency of the world's most stupid updater algorithm.

So yeah, it's "better" that way - for Symantec. If you can't see all the bugs, they don't exist. Pure Symantec logic. Reminds me why I got rid of every trace of yellow products everywhere I could. I strongly suggest everyone here doing the same. (And don't hope for any useful help from Symantec support, completely naive.)
