If you take into account that they have over 60% of the market, which means that many more people are running their products and most are not having issues.. then yes they have gotten their act together. In contrast, other vendors that have a fraction of a percent market share and their customers are still having lots of issue, one can only imagine what would happen if they had Norton's market share.

Well if Symantec has 60% of the market, then they should have the resources to make sure they have more rigorous testing schedule, better code audits etc.

I was an early (v. 1.xx) user of Outpost Pro. In brevity, I can say from my experiences that it was a great program, with versions 2.5xx, 2.7xx, and particularly for me version 3.51xx being the most bug free and usable. Like many other security programs, focus has been lost at just creating the very best of what was the original intent of the program for the widest number of people.

Every company looses their way sometime or the other. Symantec went through that in 2005 & 2006, but ever since the 2007 products many of us users believe they have turned the corner. I have no problems with the 2008 products, and I hear that the 2009 products are (well) very different from anything we've seen before.

    "Is Outpost fading away"

Probably not but this thread is, so let's do re-focus on the thread title and contribute the Symantec discussion in a more appropriate thread Please.

    Thanks,
    Bubba

I might think about giving Outpost a try once Faronics release anti-executable for Vista.

    Setup would be something like
    Anti-Executable
    Software Firewall (Outpost perhaps)
    Sandboxie

I am currently using the latest version of Outpost Security Suite of a Windows XP SP2 system without problems. I have been an Outpost user for awhile now (since 2.1 I think). For me it is still the best option. I have tried other software firewalls but keep going back to Outpost. I like how it works and the amount of flexibility I have with rule sets and tweaking it to my liking. Now that I have switched over the Security Suite I have dropped my anti-virus scanner and now use Outpost Security Suite exclusively. All of the major features such as Web Control, Host Protection, Anti-Malware and Anti-Spam can be turned off, even the Firewall. I turned off the Anti-Spam feature as it only works with Outlook, Outlook Express which I do not use.

I think there has been much improvement in Outpost. At first I was resistant to the security suite idea but, now like it. It's not perfect and there still are minor issues, at least for me, but I still think it is the best option available. My one big complaint is the new logging system. I like the older system of logging. This last version does show promise and has improved log usability, but I still miss the filter and sorting options of the older system. The logs was one of my biggest reasons for using Outpost, and the reason I went shopping for awhile. Not for long I might add. Just like Outpost. Hopefully we will see more improvements with logs in the future. I also like the feature that allows me to disable stealth as I prefer ports to be seen as closed vise no present.

I don't think Outpost is fading away at all.

    Edit: Correct spelling

Is it heavy on XP for you? Does anyone know how heavy it is on Vista?

Not in my opinion. I have a 3GHz P4 with 1024MB of memory. I am satisfied with the performance of XP with OSS installed.

I tested many firewalls and finally decided to buy Outpost 20008.

Why? Because t's relatively cheap for 3 computers, at least as good as any other firewall around (including Comodo with which I for my part had more troubles) and since 2 months serves me well.

Fact is that not a single firewall is bug free, and a firewall that does a good job for one person doesn't necessarily need to be the perfect choice for another. Windows is unstable by nature, adding programs to it increases this instability. Running a firewall on one system probably yields different effects when compared to another. So it's a matter of personal preference and system state which firewall to choose. There's simply no perfect firewall, each one works differently and has its own weaknesses and strengths in one or the other way.

Judging whether Outpost "fades away" and evaluating its market position needs a lot more than only the personal experiences of a handful of users here in this forum.
I for my part have no doubt Agnitum is well alive and breathing...

Just to add my two cents worth, I have had not a single problem with Outpost Pro 2008 and no compatibility issues with AntiVir, Spyware Doctor, KeyScrambler, Site Advisor, Sandboxie, and Haute Secure (no longer installed) on both Vista and SP machines.

This statement could be true for any security product, it can not be exclusively true for Outpost.

Is Outpost fading away? I think NOT, but the thrill of setting rules is gone. There is growing boredom with features and functionality that require endless tweaking. Outpost kept many busy for a while, now many are moving on to look for a product that can be tweaked and configured in new ways. :D

IMO, its become hard to get anyone to pay for a stand alone firewall considering how many good free ones are available. For a publisher to succeed by integrating their firewall into a suite the AV has to be pretty solid. Zone Alarm is agood example, using the Kapersky AV engine. Outpost has not been able to do this either.

I'm using the Outpost Firewall v.6 with Windows Vista and NOD32 AV v.3 and all works fine for me.

I don't mind paying for something if it works well. I went back to OutpostPro after an Online Armour trial but unfortunately was suffering BSODs - my first problems with OP, so now I've switched to Jetico 2 on that set up which is what I usually use for a firewall.

You can add me to the list of Outpost BSOD victims and my frustration level is through the roof. I recently did my seasonal XP reinstall and have switched over to Comodo on both boxes.

Comodo Comodo Comodo ... that's all I ever hear on this forum these days. If there's one thing certain it's that I will never trust a free firewall with a sales pitch as incessant and in-your-face as Comodo's. And it's a great pity the Comodo fanatics have spoilt this forum with their (mostly indirect) attacks on other firewalls. I used to like coming here to read contributors like Stem and other firewall experts talk about about Look n Stop, Jetico, Outpost, and other firewalls. Nowadays every thread is hijacked by someone trying to shove Comodo in my face. Free or not, I'm not buying into it. Trust? You must be joking.
