    I am seeking a Wordpad substitute that is...
    Light
    Stable
    Does .txt & .rtf
    Tabbed
    Free or cheap

    I have been using a golden oldie known as WordTabs, programmed by Skip Bremer. It was written in the days of Win98 & is no longer being maintained. It's starting to show its age, so I would like to find a replacement (I use XP).

    Any links/suggestions would be appreciated.

    I use QJot.

    Portable (601 kb), support .txt, .rtf and even .doc (with limitations).

    Unfortunately isn't tabbed.

    P.S.: it seems Notepad++ doesn't support .rtf.

    Notepad++ is one of the "must have" apps, but it's more of a "raw text" and code editor than a word processing app.
    Replacements for WordPad must be lightweight word processors like Jarte (it uses the WordPad processing engine but it has advanced features and a tabbed interface), Abiword (classic light word processor) and QJot.

    Some excellent suggestions. Thanks to all.

    I went for Qjot, despite its lack of tabs. Qjot is amazingly tiny and simply superb -- obviously programmed by a true craftsman. Thanks muchly majoMo!

    Another Notepad++ user here.

    What I like about it :

    Its free, although I would of paid for it, all the supported computer languages and different themes, short cuts, different views, getting around and plug-ins.

    it's a good editor, hands down one of the best. but how come everybody's recommending notepad++ as a wordpad substitute when it doesn't support rtf.

    @ bellgamin, a tip to QJot:

    If you right click in QJot'Windows bar the toolbars and windows'text hold on hidden. It's cool - and useful.

    ;)

    @Mrkvonic -- Wow, I knew of NP++ but was not aware of all those excellent plug-ins. NppExport is very useful, but it does not provide the requisite range of formats, functions and helps available from a true word processor such as Jarte, Qjot, et al. Notepad++ is a superb text editor for programmers & webmasters. It is amazingly adaptable & configurable, but it is not very well suited to function as a word processor.

    @MajoMo -- Handy tip. Thanks!

    @ruinebabine -- CryptEdit 4.1 is great. The site you linked seems to be in Russia, & downloads unusually slow.
    +++Actually, the proponent has gone "commercial" and now sells Polyedit for $27.95. Polyedit equates to a re-named version 5 of CryptEdit.
    +++However, free CryptEdit 4.1 is still available from other sites such as MajorGeeks.

    You're right about the link I gave you. A better place to download it with all the add-ons is here.
