Try to remove all entries of BitDefender by using this tool. Reboot your pc afterwards. See if it now works. If you want to try a BitDefender trial in the future. Otherwise you can contact customer care I am almost sure that they might offer you a new trial period.I don't know the exact trial policy. Check also your system date and time.

I have one problem with updating, and I am not sure the AV is the problem, maybe more their internal release procedure. What I mean is that sometimes I'll get a bunch of new DLL, even a new version in the about box(let's say I was a 11.0.15 and then I get 11.0.16 after the update), then, during the same day, I'll get 2-3 more complete updates with dll that screw things up. Tech support wil then ask me to uninstall, reinstall, and then update, and strangely I will never get that 11.0.16 version again. Like they pulled it out. This is not an isolated incident, it happens from time to time.

Premature release? Someone who put DLL in the wrong folder on their server? Dunno

This is one that tests good some places and not good at others. Also, on several tests, it was shown to slow down the machine more than any other AV.

Due to its poorly designed GUI, BitDefender has not been that famous...
However, it scores high at the AV tests.
The Scanning Engine of BitDefender is one of the most reliable
in the sense that it goes Really Deep in your files.

A few months ago, BitDefender AV 2008 traced
some suspicious files in hidden system folders,
whereas KAV 7.0 and NOD32 3.0 had failed to do so.
When I submitted these files to various online scanners,
    they proved to be malware.
I guess BitDefender is an underestimated AV...:shifty:

    It is, indeed.

The only thing i don't like about BD is the need of system reboots in order to apply certain updates. Almost everyday o_O

This was happening with BD 10 from time to time when new significant updates were available, the only time when you will get a need for restart with BD 2008 is first time after you install it and you are offered then to choose to never restart after updates.
BD 2008 is not perfect neither other antivirus software,i hate the new BD 2008 interface opozed to the clasic BitDefender one(that is visible now only in the advanced setings panel) but i love its job.Doesnt hog my system, has a fast scaner and protects my computer along with my firewall.
I used untill now a lot of antiviruses in paralele with BD like KAV,NOD 32,TrendMicro,Antivir,Avast,F-Prot,F-Secure and i never found active malware in my partition with the BD at double checks. All this antivirus software have their problems and its normal because there are a lot of configurations outthere.
Romania has tradition in antivirus software dont worry, you can trust BitDefender ,if you dont know or if you are new in this may i remind you that RAVantivirus made by GeCAD(founded in 1996) was at the moment of its aquisition by Microsoft(2004 if i remember corectly) one of the top antivirus software and the numero uno in Linux antivirus software.Micrososft has implemented this rav tehnology into their Windows Defender. Many virus researchers that work at Antivir(the mega detector) are also romanians.
So if you dont have compatibility issues use it by all means.

That just goes to show that AV's run differently on different machines. I have BD Total Security running on 3 machines, one being an older, slower laptop(running XP), one being an older PC running XP and one being a newly built PC running Vista 64-bit and NONE of them exhibit any type of slowdown, whatsoever. That is why I chose BD over other, because it was so light on all my machines

On the flipside, Kaspersky 7 bogged down my past XP machine(also the same result when it was running Vista) and my laptop.

I think the only way for a user to tell is to test drive the AV's on their own machine.

I know, i would trust in BD anyday and i had no compatibility issues with it then.

However, what i trialed was BD 2008 AV, the only BD version i ever tried. The behavior i described above is present in BD 2008.

If i had chosen to "never restart after updates", those new definitions would have never been installed properly. Certainly, this is not what i want.

The prompts to restart happened almost everyday, even one day had twice :thumbd:

Great program but i think it needs some improvement on how it handles its updates, IMHO :)

Do you empty your internet cache from time to time? How many add-ins (add-ons) are currently loaded in Internet Explorer? I don't have any slowdown with http traffic scanner enabled. You have plenty of options to reduce the cpu and memory usage. But personally I don't have any problems so I let BitDefender scan everything to enable one of the options which are : only to scan program files, user definied files, not scanning inside archives, etc this will reduce the cpu and memory usage. My computer doesn't have that much internal memory it has only 512 mb ram. But every computer and software configuration is different. I don't have any slowdown issues on my 3 home pc's.

    Macstorm,

That are product upgrades and bugfixes that need to be applied. Sometimes during normal updates the services needs just to be restarted. But with a product upgrade some parts can be changed because they are protected by the BitDefenderself protection which don't allow you that you can change or delete one of the program files that are located in the BitDefender installation directory.

Thanks for your feedback, Niels :)

I still think BD is a great av program. How i'd wish developers can reduce the number of required reboots. It's my only gripe about BD.
