Quite by accident I ran across the *mother lode* for anyone who is seeking information concerning media players.

I sometimes start my software search on Wikipedia because I know that they tend to have these lists and comparisons.

As for deciding on a media player, I just install them and decide for myself.

I'm seeking ultimate video and audio player which doesn't need any additional codecs and support asio. Is there any?

I don't know too much about media players but I haven't run across a video or audio format it couldn't play and it has a lot of advanced features and skins.

 

I only know of audio players with ASIO plugins: foobar2000 and Winamp.

VLC used to have ASIO support (before v0.8.2).

 

foobar2000 I use now but I'm seeking all in one player. I have tested KMPlayer too but can't remember if it support ASIO.

EDIT: KMPlayer doesn't support ASIO.

 

Foobar2000 for Flac but Nero got a plugin for that i use.

 

Obivously depends what you need and like...

I still love Winamp as my Music player.
I like VLC for Video clips in Windows.
In Linux I prefer Mplayer for both videos and music.
Even the latest and previous incarnation of Windows Media Player are acceptable.

But then I dont listen to music on my PC/laptop anymore or watch movies (apart from the odd downloaded clip or u tube), I use my Modded Xbox as a Media Center to play all my Music and Movies through my Hi-Fi...

Anyhow, those comparisions can be as confusing as they are helpful...

True. I have always liked the idea of a stand-alone basic player and then separate codecs should be installed if needed (this mainly goes for video). That will minimze the bloat as many unnecessary and rarely used codecs are loaded each time a full-blown player starts.
This is not a poll but...
I use K-Lite Mega Codec Pack, MPC 6.4 bundled, it can encode and decode (using VirtualDub) almost anything I believe.
For audio I still use Winamp, it's a bit bloated though. But the awesomeness of some DSP plugins keeps me hooked I guess. I have a license for years and I still use the "Classic" skin lol.

FFDshow + DirectShow FilterPack + your preferred DS player (mine is Zoom Player)
Only for decoding (i.e. playing) though.

I use Media Player Classic. Small, no install, plays almost everything and comes with most codecs to play DVD movies, MP3, WMA, etc. I never use the MS monstrosity. Too choke with junk.

Use VLC exclusively on both tower and lap top. If I run into the need for additional codecs -> k-lite Pick your pack.

 

I have been using K-Lite for a long time, so I just use the bundled Media Player Classic for video. It's light and I like such simplistic GUIs.

I have MPC too, but Zoom Player is pretty powerful. Regarding codec packs, I don't like them, excepting for the DirectShow FilterPack (my favourite), Vista Codec Package and CCCP.
