Antispyware is not running as an additional engine as it was in 7.5 - the same engine now detects all types of malware. One of the main reasons is that it is really impossible to differentiate between different types of malware nowadays as they all have started using similar techniques and deliver similar payload. So one engine to cover everything with no slowdown because of the additional spyware detection. On some older systems, there might be a slowdown in certain scenarios, depending on the config and OS used. But typically the new engine performs better, esp. on modern processors (dual-core etc.), where it can make full use of multi-threading. As an example: on a test system with dual core processor, 2GB RAM, running Vista Ultimate, boot is significantly faster for 8.0 then 7.5 IS and scan takes about half the time of the 7.5IS (tested on a typical system install). And that also includes more files scanned by AVG 8.0 with support for new file types (some archives and CHM files).
As you can see, it typically does not perform slower than 7.5. And that is why we interested in learning about situations when it does to further optimize. Therefore, I really appreciate the feedback that some of you provide with more details on the specific situations; without that, we cannot possibly 'fix it'. Thanks to everybody who helps. And I encourage you all, who gave AVG 8.0 a try, if you find any problems, please send an e-mail to the technical support. Your feedback is really appreciated.

Anyone else had probs with the anti spam part of the suite?
I have just acronised back a long way, reinstalled and still the anti spam keeps putting all my good contacts in the blacklist without asking. I take them out, save, but when you come out of outlook again it has forgotten and blacklisted everyone! Seems like a bit of a glitch. I am useing outlook 2007 here.
I would be interested to know if anyone else has had probs.
I have now uninstalled the spam module and gone back to Ella until they can sort this out. I have mailed support re this by the way, though waiting for a response at the mo.
    Running xp home sp2

    Thanks in anticipation.

Although the test drive was looking good, I took AVG 8 off and here is why:

After a reboot the error "Watchdog Not Connected" would appear, followed by "Watchdog Connected". The tray icon would turn red at the first message, but would not turn back to the normal four color trademark after the second message. To get rid of the red icon I had to unload the GUI and restart it.

    Anyone?

After trying Avg Av Pro 8.0 for a few days on 3 machines, I came to the conclusion, that it was running as it should, while the start looked very good and impressive. My biggest complaint is: the slowdown on opening websites and programs. I tried on Vista and XP.
I have used Avg Pro 7.5 for a long time because of it's lightness, but this new version is not what it should be.

For now, back to Dr. Web.

I really wanted AVG 8.0 to work as like many others I like it a lot. However, by now using Avira PP, PC Tools FW, and Mamutu. My PC is back to its original quickness and my Internet speed is what it should be. Plus I feel just as protected. Maybe a new program update will help for us Windows XP users with only MB of RAM. I still think the slowness has something to do with the AntiSpyware that now runs with the AV Shield.

Yes, they all seem in a hurry, but forget, that a lot of people get disappointed with a 'not completely tested' product and run to the others.

I've been running AVG IS 8 on my Vista 32-bit machine for about 3 days now and so far things are running smoothly - even my websites load as quick as they did before (using an athlon dual core by the way). The only glitch for me so far (and I've just sent a request to technical support) is that in email scanner it is still showing that 0 emails have been scanned even though I've sent and received a far few since I installed. I've set it to certify both incoming and outgoing and that's working fine so presumably it is scanning them. I'm using Outlook 2007. Anyone else got/noticed this problem?

I installed the new 8.0 AVG Antivirus, and with nothing else installed with it. Except PCtools firewall. I like the look and feel, but when going to surf on the web, my Fan speed was well you no ( Geez ) I always had the AVG (Paid) Antispyware running with all other AV,s that i threw in with it too. So it,s either the link scanner or the web sheild or both for the slow down, I have XP sp2, dual-core Pentium 4 3.20ghz and 2gb ram. Anyhow i got till mid sept-09 to use it if i want to try it again later.

Do you have the servers activated? They should be by default, but you never know!

Boring, nothing changed for a free version. It was crippled beyond usability before, but now its completelly crippled compared to v8.

    Hi Ade1.
I also have a problem with outlook 2007, but a different one to yours, mine is to do with the anti spam being forgetful and putting my contacts on the wrongs lists all the time.
I guess it might well be some sort of conflict with outlook 2007 as it works slightly differently to other versions. I do hope they sort it soon as everthing else is fine.

    AVG 8 Free?

    > Worst-Case Scenario: AVG Free remains frozen at version 7.5 .
    > Effect: Many users of the Free AVG 7.5
will switch to Avira Classic and Avast; if they upgrade their Free versions, too.

    We'll see...:)

I got the same thing - I believe these are reg entries put there bu another AT/ AS to inoculate your PC from these nasties - eg, false entries puit there to fool the real nasty in to thinking you are already infected -so it wont bother infecting you

I had over 500 of these AVG8 found - but I run SAS etc, so dont believe they were real infections

Yes, it was like that for AVG 7.5 also, it should be another ~2 months before the free version is pushed out.

I orignally installed the avg 8.0 pro antispyware (with avg antivirus) with the yahoo toolbar and the webshield and linkshield. (on xp pro sp2)

I found both browser to go real slow. I reinstalled avg 8 using the add/remove components inside the program before it continues to install and did a custom install and unchecked the webshiled and linkshield and made sure that the check is not in the box for the yahoo toolbar.
Now I find websurfing is fast again. Both browsers do not take a few moments to open, they open right away.

If you want what you had with 7.5 I suggest you do the same thing

It is a way to get the right speed with the new Avg, but I don't think it should be needed to disable some modules in order to get it working properly.
I like to use a webshield if it is built-in, so why disable it?
The new Avg should be fixed the proper way, without having to tweak. That's not what I buy it for!

    Hi Rollers,

Just trialling it on my laptop too (using XP, Outlook 2003) and I've just checked anti-spam blacklist and yeah, it's added in emails which I've emailed recently. Surely these should be added to the whitelist if they're not there already. Presumably a setting 'automatically add people I email to the whitelist'. Haven't looked so not sure if there's an option for that already. But it seems a problem then with Outlook in general whether 2003 or 2007 it doesn't matter. Will check my Vista PC later and see if that's added entries to the blacklist. But definitely something that needs to be addressed. I'll email tech support now.

I find that the 8.0's command-line scanner is not work. Anyone has the same problem? But when I use 7.5's cls, it's OK.

Also, the base path is quite strange, in "system32/drivers/avg". If the cls has an option(switch) that can specify the base path will be better.
