Guess that you're back with "The Doctor" then?
How is your overall "feelings" about the new AVG?
Should we try it out or avoid it for now?

    Cheers

actually no, im still trying AVG out.

people who try it for 10 minutes will never get a proper feel of it.

its working great actually, very impressed

however, its not super light anymore, there is definatly time added to boot up and browsing can drag a little sometimes.

other than that, no issues to mention yet.

There seems to be either a user error or a mixup over at the AVG website, as the USD 10.00 cost pertains to increasing the license of AVG IS to cover one more computer.....:doubt:

The upgrade worked for me with no problems at all, totally free.

    My observations:

I installed AVG 8 Pro without the web shield, mail scanner or toolbar. Leaving out the web shield also gets rid of the link scanner, which some complain slows things down while surfing. One could say this a free upgrade from pro to anti-malware.

As installed, web browsing does not appear to be any slower than it was with Avira Pro.

While the link to Stephan's post on http scanning is well taken, I suspect this is more of a long shot risk as most AV's today do not have this feature. As for link scanning, this feature is already built into Firefox with a daily download from Google. I don't have a mail client installed, so no mail scanner.

Previously I had problems with sharing files over my home network when using AVG. This has been fixed in the new version.

The interface is a bit minimalist. Annoying for some power users, but better for most as it cuts the chances of making a mistake.

Many of you are speculating about the features of the free version. Its a bit early to do that, but I suspect it will not have much more functionality than the present free version.

On demand scanning is noticeably faster than before. Tracking cookies are listed.

I just don't know kodl. With or without Web Shield active it seems FF opens ok sometimes, and yet other times it definitely takes longer. I only have 512MB of RAM, and I have noticed since installing AVG that My Computer and Control Panel, and especially Add/Removes Programs open slower than before. Maybe this is why FF opens slower at times. I have a Windows XP Slide Show Screen Saver running and this may at up some memory. Maybe a full GiG is needed to maintain speed with AVG 8.0 on board? I may soon add another 512MB as it would be nice to have the added speed to go along with Pentium 4 processor. All in all, even with the slight and occasional slowdowns, AVG 8.0 is very nice. I have ran Mamutu enabled and disabled with AVG and strangely I see no differences in speed. I will say that I did see some slowness with AVG 7.5 with the Spyware Module active. Maybe this has something to do with some of the slowness reported?

All working well 24 hours later apart from the anti spam!
all my whitelist addresses keep transferring to the blacklist and my mail ends up in the junk folder whether I like it or not. I have uninstalled the anti spam part now and gone back to a standalone one. Apart from that the suite is sweet!

I have now installed AVG Internet Security, updated it and scanned my whole PC.

The problem lay with RegDefend in that I thought that clicking on 'Exit' disabled the software for new installations. I now see that it doesn't, but could not see how to disable it temporarily, so removed it totally.

AVG Internet Security is now in place!

I had (still have) AVG Anti-Spyware Licence untill Oct 2009. I just downloaded and installed AVG AntiVirus 8, the Key works however the AVG Icon in the taskbar reports that it is AVG AntiSpyware Professional Edition, even though I checked all the components, and they are all installed and active o_O  I suppose its recognizing my AVG AS Licence. One thing though :( MSN Messenger wont work unless you deactivate the Instant Messenger protection, this needs fixing :ninja:

After getting home from a good day on the golf course, I was anxious to see how AVG 8 would perform with a first time startup of my PC. The AVG icon loaded fast in the taskbar, but it took my Firefox browser forever to open. Browsing speed was kind of sluggish. I decided to read a few e-mails, and then left the computer for about 30 minutes. I came back to see if anything had changed. Still sluggish browsing with Firefox. Tried it with IE 7. No difference. I thought I would give it another couple of hours just to see if things would change. It didn't. I uninstalled AVG 8 and went back to using KIS 7. Browsing speeds are back to normal.

That's why I'm going to uninstall Web Shield and Link Scanner. If it helps great, if not well My PC ran fine with Mamutu, AVG Pro, and CounterSpy. Hell it was even ran a little faster with Spy Sweeper installed. I like it a lot, but I also like me speed both of PC usage and browsing. Arrrr! The thing is that sometimes everything seems fine. Maybe there is some CPU spike that causes the slow not slow scenario?

I beta tested avg8 from its beginning. One of the complaints was that ms mesenger or windows live messenger did not work with webshield on. I would have thought they would have fixed this. You should send a report through your program telling Grisoft it is not working, if enough people do they will issue an update to fix this.

Also if you disable webshield you might find surfing a lot faster. We also saw that in the beta version.

also if you are running avg free antivirus with avg antispyware pro and updating the antispyware 8.0 you need to uninstall avg free and avg antispyware first before installing 8.0. the program says it will do this but for me it did not. On xp pro sp2, it removed avg free 7.5 only and left avg antispyware pro 7.5 so i was left with 8.0 and 7.5

    I uninstalled 8.0-rebooted
    uninstalled avg spyware 7.5-rebooted
reininstalled 8.0 and all was well

I did a full install because i want to see what it puts on so i know what to do for my clients.
Just so you know it is scanning as a service instead of an application and it does use less memory when doing a scan.

I have not had a chance to put it through a full test yet, i want to give it a few days and see how it goes. I was beta testing the full suite on another test computer that i have that has only 326 megs of ram and even that low it did not do bad at all.

After i get a chance to give it a run for its money i will let you know how it is doing but so far it looks fine.

Well I uninstalled AVG 8.0 and now that I did I can see an improvement in overall speed of PC and Internet. I first tried just uninstalling Web Shield and Link Scanner to see if it helped, but it didn't. I think the Antispyware Component is the culprit. I also had a slowdown with AVG 7.5 when the AS component was installed and running. Unfortunately I see no way of uninstalling the AS Component like you could with 7.5. I may reinstall when I add more RAM to see how it goes. I still like the new look though, and think it's a nice program.

I to would like to see the option to disable the antispyware.
Personally I would rather use SuperAntiSpyware in realtime then the one included with AVG.
I don't want link scanners, web scanners, malware scanners or toolbars.
If they want to include all this fine but give the users the option to install only want they want. Please.

I agree danny9. Although I like the "idea" of them, I'm not sure they're needed. I just put the 6 month trial of Avira Personal Premium that I got in January back on my PC, which is known to have great protection, and all is running well. I also have Mamutu running with it and Windows XP Firewall enabled behind a Wireless Router Firewall. I believe this is really more than I need, which is my point. Anyway got to get some sleep now that I'm finished uninstalling and reinstalling security programs. At least for now. LOL. Oh and I like SAS too, but I got to tell you that Counterspy ran very well on my PC and I think at this point for the same amount of money, I would choose it over SAS, even though I like it too.
