I'm using a theme that is available through TuneUp Utilities. I'll go back to the XP default to see if that makes a difference.

curiousmicrobe.........I went back to the default XP skin. That fixed the problem. :) Thank you for suggesting that. I never would have thought that would be the cause of the problem. I wonder why the TuneUp Utililties' skin affected AVG?

It did. Any ideas why a third party skin would affect AVG?

Probably it has something to do with the poor implementation of the skin by the product you were using. I'm not an expert in that field. However, in most cases it's a poorly implemented skin / theme that causes those sort of problems.

I guess all is not free.
I have a license for 3 computers for AVG with Firewall.
Entered my license for the upgrade and it said it would cost 10.00 for the upgrade.
Guess I missed the paragraph where it said that a small fee would be charged for upgrades.
It was my understanding that all upgrades were free as long as a valid license was in use.
Anyone else here have this problem.
    Is this the norm?
Not the money, just the principle.

If you're using this link: http://www.grisoft.com/ww.90223 when you input your 7.0 key it should give you the 8.0 key and the download....haven't seen anything about them charging for the upgrade key.......

Anyone know how to get the Control Panel (AVG User Interface) to remember it's position? Everytime I launch it, it comes up in a different place (usually upper left). It's one of those things that has no impact on the app itself other then annoying meo_O

    Thanks for the info.
Will give it a try in a couple of days.
Downloaded the trial first to see how ver. 8 handles.
    So far, so good.
    No noticeable slowdowns.
Uses alot more memory but with no effect on system but alot more then other suites I have tried.
Heaviest being avgrsx.exe which shows a memory usuage of 44,000k.

    Glad you like it!
Actually lots of memory is share between different processes, also some memory is allocated from a different pool than it used to be in previous versions. The issue with memory displayed in the Task Manager is that this is a 'Working Set' - which is what OS sets aside for that particular process. This includes shared memory for each of the processes that share it (so e.g. 10MB shared is added to all processes that share this chunk - altogether 50MB for 5 processes etc.). The overall impact on the system should be minimal though.
Also, esp. for those with dual- and quad-core processors, in the on-demand scan ("Scan Computer..."), try to play with the scan priority setting. This can have dramatic effect on CPU usage and therefore overall system performance when running on-demand scans. Especially useful for scheduled scans. With minimum system impact the scan speed is the longest but you typically do not notice a scheduled scan running in the background at all.

I now have AVG V8 on my main PC. Licensed. It's found tracking cookies that my other licensed Antivirus missed. :cautious:

Maybe you chose to have a CD with the new version delivered? Because the upgrade is really free, for the whole duration of your license. You can even use the old license key... It is automatically accepted by AVG8

And there it was deleted from my system. It worked OK in the beginning, but now when I boot up, the internet connection was gone. Everything was slowed down, and it took over a minute to open firefox. The computer hanged, and I did try to reinstall several times.

Uinstalled it, and everything is working now. This is really bad by AVG. I'm not going back until they fix all the slowdowns and problems.

Still without antivirus (so relying on Sandboxie and RegDefend) as no workable solution yet from AVG as to why AVG Internet Security 8.0 will not install after entering new licence key. It baulks at installing an icon on the taskbar, and the installation then fails.

AVG Internet Security 7.5 was uninstalled first and the system rebooted. Even using a good registry cleaner (RegVac) and fresh downloads of the new program have not worked and the old licence key for AVG Internet Security 7.5 is now shown as invalid when trying to reinstall that software.

I know that their Technical Support is probably very busy, but I am frustrated at not being able to use my PC fully as I disconnect from broadband when not actually browsing with Sandboxie or receiving e-mails virus scanned through PlusNet.

    Anyone with a solution please?

I am the only user of my PC so am shown as administrator, so batch file received from AVG early this morning cured nothing, alas.

it's probably were I end up , that is removed. It seems to run some things fine but others just don't respond & one is my baseball games & not a complicated program, it just stalls opening?, no idea why. The couple things I don't like is the length of time link scanner takes to search a link before giving it a thumbs up or down & this feature only works in IE, not firfox or Opera, I have to ask why not?. I turned it off from the toolbar but than the program in the systray goes red like there's a major problem, I turned it off as in user discression so I know it off I don't need to be reminded. I think it's a good effort & will work for a lot of people with a custom install that maybe the answer. The only other thing that comes to mind is false positives & detection, it'll be awhile before we know but I feel it'll be competitive...

Could you possibly specify exactly what game and program it is? And if you could possibly send this info to the technical support, that would be just perfect.
For search, the page has to be loaded in the background to have it checked - that's why it may take longer. But it works both in IE and FF - Opera is not supported, yet. The search protection is available only for Google, Yahoo and MSN Live, could that be the problem? In any case, with the Active Surf-Shield, you are protected always, in all browsers and for all your browsing.
Several people suggested this recently, will most likely be changed in some update

I tried FF & the link scanner didn't work there & if I uninstall I would customize install & remove that & spam as I don't get that much. I like the lightness & responsiveness, I didn't look to see if they allowed for exceptions as I could but my baseball game folder there & it would repond better. The game is not one you get in a store, it's statistical in nature...I would also mention that I did a goole search in IE for a baseball reference site that I know is extremely deep, as in every player that played , teams stats back to the team 1st year etc. The link scanner spun for better than 10 minutes before I cut it down. That needs work IMO...

Still no problems here, but FF definitely takes longer to open with AVG installed. I was thinking about doing a Custom reinstall and leaving out Web Shield. I agree about the Link Scanner taking time to initialize, but I disabled it in FF.

Could you possibly rather try to uninstall (untick the checkbox) the AVG Security Toolbar? I would appreciate feedback if that helped. Thanks!

I tried installing again, after the failed attempts, and unchecked the toolbarbox. Alas, yet another failure!

I have to ask what the purpose of doing this is?
When I try a new version I load both barrels.
I want to know how the entire program works, not just part of it.
Personally, after running this for awhile, I think there's a ways to go to meet the efficency and smoothness of v. 7.5.
And what is with the computer scan?
Ran that and it found over a hundred trojans and viruses.
All other scanners show my system as being clean as well as 7.5.
I've heard of false positives but this is one for the books.
Boot up and load time is alot slower.
Most web pages load normally but some do take longer.
    I guess I'm a little disappointed overall.
v.8 tries to do to much but does not deliver.
Going back to 7.5 which is flawless on my system until the bugs are worked out in v.8.

I should love to revert to AVG Internet Security 7.5, but having accepted a new licence key for version 8.0, the one for 7.5 is no longer said to be valid!

The error code, missed from my earlier post about AVG Internet Security 8.0 failing to install, was 0x80070005.

Still awaiting further support from AVG following my e-mail to techncal Support some five hours ago, although the problem is over 24 hours old now.

Because AVs are not supposed to find tracking cookies.
