It basically replaces the start menu, taskbar, system tray and other features of explorer. Which means you can get away with not running the bloated explorer.exe unless you need to browse your drives. GhostShell adds media player support for Itunes and Winamp, better hotkey support, clipboard buffering (you can see and select clip history), lower overhead and proper theme support. Instructions: 1) Unzip archive (with full paths, do not run from the .ZIP file itself) to your hard drive 2) Run ghostshell.exe . Select YES at the prompt to install it, or NO at the prompt just to test it over the top of explorer.exe 3) Right clicking on the START button brings up your desktop and drives on your computer Uninstall Information: 1) Click on the Ghost at the bottom right of the screen. 2) Click on the button UNINSTALL GhostShell. Changes since last beta: -Added the OPENGL 3D accelerated renderer -Fixed clock so it shows the desired output from control panel -Fixed systray icon updating and offset problem -Many bugs and fixes relating to rendering, too many to list.

There are only a few minor things Explorer does that GhostShell isn't emulating at the moment. Desktop bars (like the google one) aren't 100% in GhostShell, so if you use one of those you'll need to see if GhostShell works ok with that as I had to reverse engineer the MS code to get it to work at all. And there are no "desktop" icons, instead that is replaced into a menu available at a rightclick. The goal of GhostShell is to be as compatible as explorer.exe with other software, but of course do it better. It's probably about 95% achieved on that goal at this stage. The better stuff is lower resource usage, more features, 3d hardware acceleration, etc.
I still have blanks in the areas where my systray icons exist (I can click on them, but they just don't display). However, besides this is runs great. Cheers, Alphalutra1

Hello, I also have blank space in my tray where icons of running apps should be displayed. After turning Open GL on, 90% of the icons come up but all of them showing the same icon of one of the running apps. When trying to turn Open GL off Ghostshell freezes down. Run command still does not run the app typed in. Otherwise it is a great idea, indeed. Congratulations, Jason! Just go on!
No icons now. A bit of Comodo's prompt is still there. After closing windows, the taskbar still shows them.
Enabling "OpenGL to display GUI" shows icons, but not all. Few further glitches in pic. Using the test theme pic 2. I'm uninstalling it now, this is my laptop, and i need it working good.
Was the pic taken with OpenGL enabled? If your 3d card isn't very good there might be issues with using OpenGL on it. I noticed in VMware I had to code in some legacy support to get it's OpenGL (it could just be using software OpenGL I'm not sure) working correctly with bitmaps. I can reproduce the non opengl systray icon bug too - new beta with those fixes and a context menu on right click will be out soon.
Yes, in my last post, OpenGL is enabled on 1st pic, then with test theme, still with OpenGL on pic2. About the graphics, that could be it, i have no clue I'm using a Toshiba Satellite M70-320. MOBILITY™ RADEON® X700 (i thought this was good, but then again beats me)

Just tried this new shell and it diables Comodo Firewall's completly. plus as you others mention, no tray icons but can still right click on the try and pull up the programs. this one really needs a lot of work. Also caused Firefox to blue screen here. Turning on OpenGl does bring back some icons but not all.
Just figured out it was AppDefend that disabled the intire Comodo Firewall, had to uninstall AppDefend.
There is no RAW disk access in GhostShell, just the usual enumeration of drives and scanning them for files for the file list. dinput8.dll is directinput, I don't use directinput in ghostshell but possibly one of the DLLs ghostshell relies on may. There are currently no "hooks" in GhostShell besides the clipboard hook if you have that enabled (to monitor clipboard access).
Hm, that´s strange. DINput8, maybe a new spy method. Some shadow stack walker may use GSBeta trying to mask its activities, strange thing.
@ Jason: I don't know when or if you will ever get around to GhostShell development, I'm sure GSS takes a lot of your time up, but is it possible you could look at making GhostShell be able to autohide itself like explorer, thanks in advance Hugs, Fluffy
Great work there Jason. Looks and feel really nice compared to the old explorer. There are some bugs like the systray icons not appearing (opengl seem to draw them correctly sometimes). I will definitely use this as a replacement for explorer.exe in the future .
Hello Jason, I know you are focusing on the long waited GSS now. However I'd like to know your future plans with GhostShell which also seems to be a very useful app. For many of us its main prob (regarding usebility) is this 'not displaying icon' thing - which is not a user friendly solution. Otherwise it is fast and reliable. It could play together nicely with the new GSS. Can't you do sg about these nasty icons we miss so much from the tray? Thanks for your info / Xtree
I´ve seen neither new beta for GSS nor for GhostShell, project stopped? Seems many projects are shortliving ones (Antihook, ProcessGuard..) Whats up in Australia? Still something alive?
@ SystemJunkie: I don't know about that....lol....if I remember correctly isnt Online Armour and such projects like SmoothWall from the land of down under, they are still going as strong now as they ever been, so I think there is still a pulse there somewhere I would love to see Jason's other projects developed more, Ghost Shell is something I'm hoping and praying he will continue work on at some point, it would make a small and excellant replacement for Explorer, maybe after he finishes the latest GSS he will get some time to work on GS Hugs, Fluffy
Lol I forgot OA you are right but compared to the past many things drown under in down under. Think so, Ghost Shell would be very useful especially against explorer.exe nasties. The whole evil junk loves to hide in explorer.exe.
