Can you elaborate on this question a bit more? What do you mean by "internal" and "external"?

    Thanks

Options like Diskcache and Memorycache[internal] provided in 2008 as opposed to storing data on other locations like external disks or other internal disks[external]. can u explain pro and contras in these ?

    Sorry for the foggy terms.

    Huub.

    Hi,
This is not part of Returnil. Did your image or the new HDD have a hidden partition put there by the system/drive maker?

i think it got to do with sandboxie...and wierd popup screen shown up like he found new hardware and need to restart... he calls it "generic drive" or something like that...but generic(something) for sure.

No Returnil/Sandboxie conflict here. DE, you didn't by chance install Sandboixe while you had returnil protection on? All bets off on that.

Hi Mike, To put it another way. Why these options[Diskcache and Ramcache],their advantage, their convenience, reason behind to create it,against the other option to put sessiondata on another drive, which IMHO is simplier an saver[encryption ?],also keeping system drive and memory untouched, one way more to prevent messing with OS. But guess there's one reason more why you make it that way ??

Funny, I been pushing Mike to protected any and all drives on the system as does Shadow Defender.

Go back and find that thread I did on testing the Erik Albert technique. His whole point was just what you said, protected the system drive and encrypt his data on a 2nd drive. Didn't work. At least one piece of malware was able to infect the 2nd drive even though it was encrypted.

For easy recovery of non malware related stuff, protecting one drive is adequate, but for security against malware it simply isn't. Also while encryption will protect the privacy of your data, it doesn't protect against infection.

say the true ... i like returnil protect only drive c:\.... its not disadvantage .
when u add "commit" and other child games to this kinda software you expose it to malware invasion( we saw ppl like this qq225 who fool the commit option) and other security holes.

    cheers:D

    hi peter

actuley what for? if u install on c:\ partition only OS + essential programs (winrar , offiice etc) make c:\ as lets says 20 giga and d:\ the rest ( for mp3, movies etc) what more we need? why "freeze" drive d:\ ? ...combine it with sandboxie or similar .

run this methos for 1 year (sandboxie add only for recent week") got zero malware or whatever :)

    cheers

Well, I do protect my D drive with Sandboxie, but when playing with nasty stuff in a VM machine, I like to also shadow my host. In some of our tests we found that malware will install on any drive so if only c: is shadowed, it's no good. Can't run VM's in sandbox, to clumsy, and some vm processes are already running.

Well, the key word here is choice or option. Depending on your risk profile, you could set it up one way or another. Some choose to protect D:\, others choose not to. You have the choice with SD !:D

    Huupi,

I answered this part in post 125.

The design was to be simple and light-weight. Part of this was to place the cache on the System Partition so it could be protected in the same way as the rest of the System Partition. So if anything were to be able to infect the cache a simple restart of the system would remove any changes in the cache as well.

Your thoughts however are interesting and we will explore its potential in the future.

    Mike
