Yes, but F-Prot users will get those defs just as Authentium users get F-Prot defs.

But don't forget that Authentium still uses the old Frisk engine which detects considerably less than the new FPAV6 one.

But in the big picture of things, this still looks like a pretty good deal if it is free for a year. No?

iolo dont use Authentium, or F-Prot or panda or kaspersky.

they use their own engine, untried and untested.

    is it good, bad?

    who really knows.

    Incorrect. They use Authentium engine(aka f-prot 3.xx).

    your probably right,

most 'so-called staff' dont know what they are talking about.

either way, i would not trust iolo's antivirus at the moment.

When you install Iolo AV and look under "Common Files" folder you’ll see "Authentium" folder. Also if you look at various other files and drivers you will see that they belong to Authentium Inc. Simple as that....:)

    PPK is a Classic....

    Here it is!!
That's what I tried to say two times in this thread: Authentium Folder. That's what I found during my last test in August 07.

    Thank you.

Thanks for bringing up this thread. Frisk was unaware of this situation and will be looking into it. Should I hear of the result, I will let you know.

Are you suggesting that iolo was using the old fprot/command engine without the correct license?

    A small clarification:

Authentium licenses the F-PROT technology from us, and they in turn sub-license it to others. We here in Iceland may not even be aware of those sub-licensees - they have no direct contact with us.

As for Iolo, I had not heard of them before today, but it seems they are indeed licensing Authentium's technology, corresponding to F-PROT 3.x. We are not actively supporting that technology any more, and only release updates to the v3 definition files once per week for the last few remaining customers and even that will stop in a few months. Authentium can build and release definition files independent of us, so they may release updates much more frequently, even after we stop distributing those files.

There is a very significant difference between the F-PROT v3 and v4 technology, but the most important is that v4 has three independent heuristic "engines" (GSA, Maximus and Eldorado), where v3 has only a partial implementation of Maximus, and is missing GSA and Eldorado altogether.

As a very high percentage of "new" malware is now detected heuristically by us, there is a substantial (and growing) difference in detection rate between v3 and v4.

As for when/if Iolo will start using the v4 technology, I have no idea.

Welcome to the Wilders forums and thanks for the reply.
Do you have any idea on whether Authentium will move from v3 engine to the v4 engine?

No, as i said, I was not making accusations but the statements on their web site did not seem to be plausible and that Frisk was unaware of any license agreement. As Frisk clarified, and Technodrome said earlier, they are using the F-Prot version 3 engine through an arrangement with Authentium. Why they choose to claim it is their engine is beyond me, seems like false advertising to me.

    As for when Authentium goes to the new engine, I doubt that Frisk would know. Here is a blog entry in their blog about it back in July;

    http://blogs.authentium.com/virusblog/?p=181

I could find no other mention of when they will be switching or if they already have.

Perhaps to most consumers, a brand new AV engine sounds more 'exciting'.

Well I installed the Iolo Antivirus just to test it (and ofc the free 1 year licence is nice) but am I the only one who can not download virus definitions? Actually the whole download center for Iolo products seems to be down. Even had to get the AV through googled download mirror.

If it's indeed so, well then it certainly won't leave a good first impression.

Not only that. If you check Iolo's Virus Definition version and compare it with Authentium, you'll see that Iolo just copies the definition files from Authentium servers to their server.

So Iolo just made the frontend and claiming that the whole freaking technology is their brainchild. :cautious:

Moreover, there is no right-click scan option. You have to access the GUI to invoke custom path scan.

Last night I saw Eldorado detection from Authentium. :D Now I wonder what kinda contract Iolo has with Authentium.
