    Hi,

I've just renewed my subscription for NOD32 and the download included Smart Security which I was not really looking for. At present I use NOD32 and Zone Alarm Pro, which, in my opinion, are the two best applications in their fields.

When installing the downloaded ESS/EAV I am told that I must uninstall any resident security applications, AV, Anti Spyware, Firewalls etc. Does this include my current version of NOD32? I do not want to lose my current settings (Blackspear's)

I guess what I'm really asking, is should I replace Zone Alarm with ESS, which is a complete unknown for me?

Also, is there a straight NOD32 version available, with no ESS, and if so, would it be possible to exchange the ESS/EAV download for that version?

Everything is on hold at the moment.

    Cheers

    Brian

Unless there is something that I don't know about ESET's recent renewal offers something doesn't sound right about your renewal of NOD and being able to use ESS. Maybe you have the download of ESS available but only the license for EAV (NOD32 v3). If you are using ZAP (Zone Alarm Pro) with a allot of time left on your ZAP subscription then my suggestion would be to simply continue to use NOD32 v2.7 with ZAP.

Although some claim to have EAV (NOD32 v3) working with the latest version of ZAP v7.0.462, I would not recommend it. There definitely seem to be compatibility issues related to the proxy based design of the NOD v3 real time scanning engine that effects many add on firewalls for Windows XP and Vista such as Zone Alarm. This issue seems to effect some of the important features (such as the privacy features) in ZAP and depending on how you have ZAP configured it may cause various problems loading certain web pages such as those on subscription based web sites requiring a secure browser connection.

You will get many different opinions in this forum on what combinations of products to use but my recommendation would be to simply continue to use NOD v2.7 and ZAP as the preferred combination. I tried NOD v3 the first month it was released and except for a few minor bugs and the Zone Alarm incompatibility issues I experienced NOD v3 seemed to work ok on its own. Using NOD v3 (EAV) with the XP or Vista firewall enabled is always an option to consider. No matter what use for a FW and AV I also recommend using one or more free or subscription based anti-spyware programs such as SAS free or pro, Spybot S&D, etc..

You could try the latest version of ESS if you want but besides needing a license for it you will need to completely uninstall ZAP and the previous version of NOD before installing ESS. I have not tried ESS but my guess would be that as newer versions are released it could mature into a great security suite solution. When ESET no longer supports NOD v2.7 in a few years or whenever that is I will also be making a decision about whether to use EAV, ESS or an alternative security solution.

    Thanks for the info.

The ESS/EAV version was offered me via an email link in a licence renewal reminder. I have since found a link to just EAV v3.

I have unistalled ZA and installed ESS/EAV on a trial basis. So far, on a few firewall test sites, ESS is not scoring as highly as ZA with regards to stealth mode on the ports, but I'll try it for a bit longer.

    Tahnks

    Hello,

I'm using NOD32 v2.7 with the last ZAP release for a long time, without any problems. Now I'm waiting for v3 french upgrade but I expect that there will be no compatibility issues... I hope that eset developpers are working on such compatibility issues... If Nod32 v3 could not work with ZAP, that would become a real problem for me, because I did not planned to uninstall ZAP...

Now speaking about firewall : ZAP is, to my experience, one of the best personal software firewall... It is stable, speaking about release updates, that is not the case of some freeware firewall (Commodo, etc...) But if there exists other solutions with same firewall features (I do not use antispyware, cookies management etc... Only firewall), with no compatibility issues with NOD32, and that allow me to control configuration (passwd protected) and to backup/restore firewall settings, please give me informations....

Does this mean the AV doesn't work or simply that ZAP doesn't detect it?

I personally disabled ZAP Antivirus protection because job is already done at OS level, with windows XP SP2. Therefore, if I remember, it seems that NOD32 2.5 was not detected as Antivirus neither by XP nor ZAP... Never mind... The purpose of the post was to point out the fact that the following sentence
is not correct. ESET product must be designed to interoperate with 3rd party firewalls... Even if some compatibility issues can be announced as known limitations and must refer to correction roadmap...

    Regards

Thats not a big list. Of course NOD32 is working even though ZA doesn't recognize it. Keep in mind there is an extensive ZA clean up procedure. The uninstaller leaves alot of files behind.

    Hello:

It doesn't matter if ZA recognizes a different AV such as Nod32 or BitDefender etc etc. It is a marketing ploy on CP's part IMO of course and if a user had no AV it has some value.

What does matter is if our FW's and our AV's are able to work well together and give industrial strength protection. The other posters here have given us some views about issues and I for one appreciate it.

I wonder what Eset and other vendors have to say about not being detected and about the need to work with FW's? :D

    FWIW,

I have been running tests and checks with ESS with a view to comparing it with ZA Pro.

It would appear that ESS runs well and there doesn't seem to be a lot of difference between them. I have come down on the side of ZA mainly on the grounds that I am comfortable with ZA and it's interface. I have used it for so long, that I am now familiar with it's operation, and know what to expect from it, as well as having all my settings just so.

One aspect of ESS's performance that I did not like, was there seemed to be no warnings issued when new programs were run, or new connections were made, whereas in ZA, alerts are issued and options provided on how to proceed now and in the future.

So it looks, to me anyway, as if it comes down to preference. I'm now running NOD32 v3 with ZA Pro with no apparent conflicts. Yet!

    Cheers

It is good to hear that EAV and ZAP are working well together on your system. I wanted to make it clear that I am not negative as some others have been about the new EAV (NOD v3) or ESS . I experienced only a few problems with EAV as a stand alone security program. I only wanted to point out that most of the problems I saw were related to incompatibilities I discovered with using the EAV (NOD v3) and ZAP v7.x combination. I experienced the same problem on several different systems and others in this forum have reported similar problems with ZAP, ZASS and other firewalls. If you don't have any conflicts with this combination then you should keep using them if it works with your system. If you do run into problems using the EAV and ZAP combination in the future then at least you are aware of the potential conflicts.

One more thing to keep in mind is that there have been some configuration "work arounds" posted in this forum that people have used that supposedly helped with compatibility issues. You can try some of those (located in various threads) if you do run into future problems. None of the posted work arounds helped solve the conflicts I experienced when I used the EAV and ZAP combination. Therefore, at this time I still believe that NOD v2.7 is the most compatible version to use with ZAP 7.x.

I'm another one running the latest version of NOD32 alongside the latest version of ZAPro with no real problems to speak of. I'm just keeping an eye on the NOD32 suite forum to see how that pans out so I can decide whether to go with that when I renew in June or stick with what I have at the moment.;)
