Separate backup for data, settings and binary

    Hi,

I am exploring different backup solutions. Two reasons - 1) restore after crash and 2) migrate my "data" and "settings" after fresh install.

Backup/Restore procedure is: Regular full backups. When my system crash, then I could restore very easy.

But there is not easy solution to use my backups with fresh install of Windows. There is no easy way to browse my backup image and extract my "data" and "settings".

Mainly we have different "software products" with few binaries (programs, services, drivers). Every "software product" is using "data" and "settings". All this is inside my full backup image.

So, if I have pre-defined "data" and "settings" profiles. Then I could easy search and extract "data" and "settings" information from my backup images. Something like this:

    1) monitoring and logging active processes
    2) monitoring and logging changed files and registry changes
    3) wizard which analyze these log files and help me to define "data" and settings" profile for each "software product"

    It is raw idea.

Clearly he means one additional update is needed for TI 10 as it butchers the boot.ini requiring a repair with the Vista disk before a restore will work. And where the bleep is an update for TI 11 with raid drivers for the ICHR 8R/9R. TI 10 had 'em. Why aren't they in TI 11? You shouldn't have to contact support for a .ISO and boot from a CD to restore. Obviously you can't expect customers to shell out $30-$50 for TI 12 until versions that are already paid for get fixed. Get a clue Acronis!!!!

Ability to create boot media using Bart-PE plugin as a function provided as a wizard in program GUI.

Linux boot media wizard generate many problems with drivers misssing so you should think about adding of barte-pe media wizard like Kaspersky done (in Kav/Kis 6/7).

Allow archive splitting with backup locations. Scenario, I want to create an automated backup schedule with rolling backups (feature enabled by backup locations) to my FAT32 NAS. The backup file is greater than 4GB so I need to split the file. Archive splitting works without backup locations, but the two don't work in combination. A missing!

Is it possible in ATI11 the possibility, during the restoring operations, to preserve files present on the partitions?

I'll second that. It's been over 3 months since the last TI 11 update, and there are many things that need to be fixed. My wish is to get a new update soon. I sure hope I won't be expected to pay for TI 12 just to get some things fixed.

Well, I sure wish they fixed the mass storage driver injection issue ... or include more into their default database, cause injection doesn't seem to wrok quite right and most of them are not available by default

Wish: Support for restoring from hidden partitions

    Dear people form Acronis,

Could you make it possible for a future update or upgrade to implement support for restoring images that are located on a hidden partition?

    Thanks,

    Laurens

I would wish that images made by ATI can be edited (files can be removed from image for example).

Since for 7 of the last 14 days, my separate data drive partition backup always failed verification, while my separate system drive partition backup always verified successfully after saving both backup files to the same separate backup drive partition, I need to be able to force Acronis to restore the corrupted data drive partition to a separate test drive partition, so that I can get an idea of the extent of the corruption. Please either incorporate this "Force Restoration" feature into the next version of v11, or produce a debugging version which fails to check whether the backup is corrupt before restoring it. Even if a hundred files were found to be corrupted, they could be deleted and replaced after comparing their MD5 hashes. Then the files that were corrupted could be transferred one by one using Acronis File And Folder Backup and Restore. Also many of my data files are sorted by date of creation or date of modification, rather than alphabetically. I would like for Acronis File and Folder backup to preserve the old creation and modification dates in the restored files. For if they do not I might have to manually reset their creation and modification dates.

I've used Acronis True Image since version 6.0, since then I;ve purchased and extensively used 7, 8, 9, 9.1 Workstation, 10 11 and several versions of Server.

My employer in Australia is an Acronis True Image retailer through our Australian partner Mannaccom. I use Acronis extensively on home user, corporate desktop and server systems of all kinds and despite some issues, which happen; we generally find it the best solution for backup bar none.

The said there are some things Acronis MUST do to keep on top of the imaging game.

    1. Where is the Mac OS X binary, it was promised some time back.... Macs are now on Intel, Parallels Desktop ships with Acronis. Acronis has the opportunity to corner a market here comprised of users who like good software and expect to pay for it. Whats more they use a nice closed platform with limited hardware divergence, a joy to make software for.

    http://www.acronis.com/enterprise/company/inpress/2006/04-21-en.html

    Quote:
"Lawton says the road ahead looks good for Acronis in particular. The company just added 64-bit support to Acronis Disk Director Suite :10 and Acronis Disk Director Server. They've also just launched the latest versions of the corporate Acronis True Image family. On top of this, Acronis is in the process of working on an Acronis True Image for the Mac on Intel. Lawton says, "We see 2006 as the Year of the Virtual Machine. To that end, we are optimizing our products for virtualization. We already have the ability to restore images to different hardware, but we are constantly looking for ways to further refine that process."

    Hurry Up Acronis.

    2. While harping about Macs, where is the "Official" bootcamp support, Mac machines are now PCs internally, sans the use of EFI instead of BIOS. Come on; it's an Intel system from top to bottom, get on baord.

    3. Restore competitors backup files. Some work here would allow users to switch from Ghost or Terrabyte etc to Acronis.

    4. Network booting is long overdue. Not network agent booting, network booting a small but relevant difference. Give us the full richness of the boot media over a LAN.

    5. Virus scanner plugin. It would be great to be able to screen all the files going into the backup with the option of excluding infected files.

    6. Fully fledged ZFS support please.

    7. Please excuse this but I wanted to make my feelings on this issue clear. "STOP USING YOUR OWN SCHEDULER, IT'S A RIDICULOUS IDEA GIVEN WINDOWS HAS ONE BUILT IN THAT ACTUALLY WORKS PROPERLY.

    8. Also said somewhat forcefully. LET WINDOWS AUTHENTICATE THE BACKUP LOCATION. STOP DOING IT INTERNALLY. If a user wishes to use an open share with no password, stupid, insecure and vulnerable as that may be, it is up to them. If the account that is logged in has access to such a share, Acronis should push backups to it NO ARGUMENT. Acronis is the only software I've ever seen that errors using shares with clear passwords. Not Good Enough!

    9. Fix mapped network drive support. Sometimes it works, sometimes it doesn't, it almost always works if UNC is used. Z:\Backups is just as valid as \\server\backups. Make it go reliably.

There is plenty to like about Acronis, it is by far the best backup utility ever..... BUT it could be SO much better. Swallow your pride, give up on the things that don't work, don't get caught up on previous design politics, security hysteria or platform bias. just make the software as malleable as possible.

    GeeeAus.

What I wish from Acronis for True Image...

    1. Trueimage should run without problems from the rescue media and makes, what I've paid for: correct images without freezing.

    2. The Secure Zone should be invisible by default, when you choose, which partitions you want to include in your image. So the error by including the secure zone is impossible.

    3. It should be possible, to make more than one single image in the secure zone (if it's big enough by size - of course).

But first of all (like I wrote in "1.") - acronis should makes true image finally a product, which does, what we paid for. Till now, it's a bug festival - a beta or alpha version - not a final release :ouch:

    1) TI should install in the drive folder specified by the user during the installation. Currently the installer dumps 196 MB of staff in:

    c:\program files\common files\acronis

and the rest (just around 40 MB) in the specified folder (eg. p:\acronis)

    2) Does TI really need to take up so much space (250 MB)?

No real need to install Acronis - just run it from the boot CD and save the space.

That is fine if you don't mind taking time out to run manual backup images. TI does mine for me automatically on the good old fit and forget basis. Version 10 that is not version 11. ;)

As it only takes 40 seconds for me to image C: using Acronis 10 plus CD load time I do it when I am working on another machine or getting a beer - so no time wasted taking time out. besides I never did figure out scheduling, incrementals, differentials, twilight zones etc but I can do a full back up or restore in my sleep - never fails.

LMAO! Backing up or restoring from a boot CD via ATI 10 or 11 is like watching grass grow or paint dry. Your total backup must be 512MB. It's more like start the backup/restore and come back 2-4 hours later.;)

Where are the fixes for TI 10 Vista restore and TI 11 ICHR 8/9 Raid controllerso_O? We've only been waiting 6+ months for fixes to both paid for builds. :argh:

In that case, this seems to depend on individual hardware configuration, just like many other things with drive imaging software. While there was no way I could use v11 for anything (I just uninstalled it), the bootable CD created with that version works like a charm. The start-up scan of my 25 partitions takes just about two seconds (much longer with the Windows installation) and creating a backup of 100 GB from several partitions takes about 5 minutes (normal compression).

I wish they would take out the long pauses where nothing noticeable is happening! It's unnerving to have the program that you have put your confidence in just sits there and you don't have an operating system at the time and neither your remote hard drive is being accessed and the main hard drive light hasn't light up in two minutes. Nail biting time then suddenly it takes off and works!

Also why does it take 1hour to back up and 2 + hours to restore?

This thread is so long I didn't even try reading all the posts here.

But my wish is for a searchable Help file.

    One suggestion...

Add Progress bar or status bar when you CONSOLIDATE backup archive.
