Whenever I run a manual scan, any type of scan, the scan will just freeze at 26% done. How can i fix this?

Sorry I don't have any helpful info on this, however I too am getting the same hang up on manual scans (Larkina a few posts down is as well). Stops for me at 56% however irrelevant that is but I get 3 black flashing dots under the magnifying glass icon once i hit pause/stop and ekrn.exe continues to soak 50% cpu until restart. Never finishes nor pauses, just keeps on flashing those dots, on a side note AVG finishes its scan, only installed that to make sure there wasn't any malicious backdrops to not completing scans. ESS 3.0.560.0 virus sig. 2785

task manager and ending both egui and erkn stops the cpu usage without having to reboot, but succeeding scans still end without passing said percent.

Hi. Up until last night my manual scans started and completed with no problems. However, I ran one last night and it froze at 53%. Have tried 4 times since then, including as I'm typing this, and it's frozen at 53%. This seems very strange indeed. The only module I can see which has been updated since I tried last is the Archive Support Module (10/1/0:cool: but I can't see how that can effect it. Unless it's something to do with one of the signature updates that's causing it to hang. The only way to stop it is for a reboot.

Yep. I'm having same problem. My manual scans have completed with no problems also until this mornig. Scan stops at some point and stays there. Ekrn.exe also stays at 95-99% because of this. My friends and relatives have the same issue (6 computers)! Something must have changed via updates?

Something obviously has changed. As said before, I can't see it being the archive support module although I don't exactly know what that does! (Help files?) I can only think that perhaps a recent virus signature update contains a "dodgy" signature which is causing the scan to hang as it hasn't been entered correctly. I'll try again with the next signature update and see if that works.

Have you tried enabling logging of all scanned files to see which file the scanner stalls on?

I had this problem too last night. For me it occurs when some of the browser cookies are being scanned (with advanced heuristics?). I deleted the cookie files that the scanner got hung up on and the manual scans now complete successfully.

The first time it did it last night it hung at 53%. The file being scanned was in "common files" under "program files". It related to the java update backup file so I scanned that folder using the context right click menu and eset scanned it just fine with no threats found. So I backed up that folder and deleted it. After that, I began again and it hung at 55% this time on a different file (sorry - can't remember which one). I'll try again and see but I disable advanced heuristics and see if that solves it. Will report back soon.

ok. I've restored the java backup folder which I removed earlier as this folder has been on my pc since Sept 07 and has never caused any problems with previous manual scans. I unchecked advanced heuristics and the unsafe applications option and ran a manual scan again. It froze again at 53% at the file - c:\program files\common files\java\update\base images\jre1.6.0.b105\core3.zip. As mentioned before, if I scan this folder using the right click menu it scans fine and says no threats found. Hope this helps.

I did some reseaching and this is what I found. Seems to me that some manifest files causes this problem. My computer freezes when manual scanning these files:

    C:\Program Files\Common Files\Java\Update\Base Images\jre1.6.0b105\core3.zip (propably the manifest file inside)
C:\Program Files\Java\jre1.6.0_04\lib\deploy\ffjcext.zip (propably the manifest file inside)
C:\Program Files\Java\jre1.6.0_04\lib\resources.jar (propably the manifest file inside)
    C:\Program Files\Mozilla Firefox\chrome\browser.manifest
    C:\Program Files\Mozilla Firefox\chrome\comm.manifest
    C:\Program Files\Mozilla Firefox\chrome\pippki.manifest
    C:\Program Files\Mozilla Firefox\chrome\toolkit.manifest
    etc.

I didn't have time to research further but there is more.
I have Advanced heuristic and runtime packers checked.

Marcos, Do you want me to send these files somewhere?

    Jeccu,

I have sent the core3.zip file to Eset for analysis.

Exactly, in my case the Update 2786 changes nothing. Absolutely nothing.

The problem can also be provoked by in the Real-time scanner by downloading Joost from: http://www.joost.com/download/windows/

ekrn.exe takes around 50 % CPU and the download never finishes.

    I am running 3.0.621.0 with 2786.
