Anyone knows of freeware that can either draw graphs or type out mathematical symbols?

    Hello,

you may have a look an this collection of software here http://freestatistics.altervista.org/en/math.php

Depending on your needs i would recommend Graphica Math Kit for quick results. Very easy to understand how to get your graphics. If you want only to visualize some functions i think this will be one of the first choices. However, no possibility to put in individual data in order to get graphical illustrations.

You may also try SimplexParser (free!) from http://www.simplexnumerica.com/
A little bit more complex but it provides much more features.
I strongly recommend to check out this site, the commercial product "SimplexNumerica" has a lot of features at a reasonable prize.

I think maxima would be a better alternative.
