    Hi all,

I've been following a lot of the posts regarding the firewall in ESS and I know that many people are not really convinced of it's effectiveness. Now it's my turn to make a final decision I just wanted to ask advice.

I'm currently using EAV 3.0.621.0 in conjunction with Comodo 2.4 and have absolutely no issues. I have approximately 10 months left on my NOD32 licence but there is an offer on the Australian website for an upgrade to ESS + remainder of licence when purchasing a new licence.

My surfing habits are ultra conservative and I have a ADSL Modem/router but I am no expert.

    What's your best advice?

    Hello,
If you're behind a router with firewall and your habits are "safe" I recommend you ESS. ESET Firewall is light in resource and in automatic mode it doesn't bother you.

Isn't the ESET antispyware and malware good enough to help with possible computer attacks? ESET recommends ThreatSense as a terrific solution that catches threats and nasties before the pass your firewall. So, why should one use another solution if ESET has the ThreatSense engine? I am just wondering.

Rather than have others guide you, you should download the 30-day trial of ESS and use it, then make a decision.

    Now, having said that....

Your current set-up should keep you very safe indeed, and as the old saying goes "If it ain't broke, don't fix it!". If you put any value into firewall leaktests then you're arguably safer with EAV/Comodo, as the Comodo firewall is more secure than the one in ESS.

Someone's been reading the marketing on the ESET website. :D

ESET's products are pretty good, but they don't have 100% detection (like every other AV product). If something nasty gets into your system, and the AV part of EAV/ESS can't detect it, it'll be able to do whatever the hell it wants. Adding a good firewall, in theory, will help, as it will catch anything trying to call out to the internet.

Thanks for this JMC. I also use a-Sqared free 2-3 times a week on my pc. Has anyone tried a combination with ESET and other malware/firewall solutions? I do not want a slow pc though. The beauty of ESET is its low resource use. Thx.

Thank you all for your advice and suggestions.

Probably I should have downloaded the trial version of ESS some time ago and tried it out for myself but I've been running scared, watching and waiting.

Now the time has come to make a definite decision.

If I do go for ESS and strike any problems, you'll be the first to know!

    Thanks again,

    Elray :)

I was running Comodo when first installing ESS. After 2 wks trial, dumped comodo as it would not recognize the "allow" command. Had 14 entries for 1 app and it was very frustrating. Put ESS fw in interactive mode, it didn't ask but ONCE and I've been smiling ever since. :)

    I agree with you Pat.

I followed the suggestion made by jmc777 and downloaded the trial version of ESS. What a sweet program and with the firewall in interactive mode leaktests are showing good results and rule setting is so easy.

So far - so good. I think I'm just about sold on this suite!

Thanks for the comments and suggestions.
