I have used outpost for a long time ....version 2/3. It has caused more than its share of problems over the years (constant bsod forced my move from Fsecure/KAV to NOD), I have looked many times for something better but always stuck with outpost.

I noticed this poll and the 2008 version today

The new version of outpost has had a chance to be fixed.... for some. I continue to have problems with the web content filter.... the one thing that sets outpost apart for me....

I could go back to version 4 but ....for now I'm trying out comodo 3.

Just wondering what do people think of outpost?
Why do you stick with it?
    Why do you leave?

I also have used OP for years, but no longer...too many issues. It's all rather interesting, and sad, as other developers are doing just fine with their firewalls.

    @Starfish:

Where did you find that poll?

It does not look very representative to me. Look 'N' Stop has nowhere near the market share that Comodo and ZA have according to two other polls I have seen, one at DSLR and the other at Matousec.

It agnitum's fault for releasing buggy software. I loved v4, but this 2008 version is quite poor. I would switch to comodo but im experiencing bugs with that as well.

i used outpost for a couple of years, but the last version that worked well seemed to be v3.51, anything after that was a buggy mess, and their support is absolutely useless.
i still have a valid OP license but not used it in the past 6months+
i was just sorry that i gave agnitum money.. once they have it they didnt help at all

    Hi,

    The trend has illustrated such.

There are more and more free firewalls with excellent quality/stability features come into the main stream. OP has since lost its edges/shininess.

I was its loyal client until v.4. Adding more features to its core value, IMO, is indeed contributed to its recent mis-shape.

Yes, the old soldier is not dying, just just fading away. Sad indeed.

I'm sorry to say, I too used outpost since version 2.5 and just recently stopped since 2008 came out. I was on the beta testing team and there was a lot of issues I posted to them and not a single one was worked on or fixed. I was very dissapointed overall. So I had to switch to comodo v3 which seems to be working fine.

    OK,

That the poll was done here explains LnS high percentage which I believe is due to the LnS support forum being here.

If you scout around it seems like the free firewalls are the most widely used, probably because they are free and some of the free ones are excellent.

The cost of utilities at $40 or so each always seemed high to me when the whole OS is $140. (AV's are different due to the daily/hourly issue of signatures.) At least for me, I would have to really need (as opposed to desire or think I need) some feature of any paid firewall to pass up the free ones in a home use scenario.

I also have used Outpost since version 2, and till version 4.
I didn't renew with Agnitum because:

    (1) As Outpost has been upgraded, the software gets more and more cluttered and buggy, impairing my system stability;

    (2) I don't need any Antispyware component - I just leave that to KAV PDM, SSM or even to SUPERAntispyware on demand;

    (3) I was tired of a hungry firewall, always consuming my RAM up to 70 MBs.

So, I have switched to Look'n'Stop two weeks ago, and I am very happy with my choice: No severe bugs, stable, and light as a feather, not consuming more than 10 MBs of RAM, even when I have up to 50 tabs opened in Firefox.

Interesting comments. I have Lifetime License. Over the years it got worse and worse. I since have gone all the way back to 2.7.493 and it is currently running at 5336K memory. Much better and more stable then newer versions.

Maybe I should try 3.51. :doubt: I don't really recall how that ran. It did not last long did it?

I too am disappointed because I thought this firewall would improve with age but like most of you (have said) it has done the opposite. No need for me to bash it. Except for the BSOD I have the same issues that have been mentioned. It is sad and disappointing to me. :(

Edit: I have not even tried v. 2008

Sadly this seems to be the way with much software these days and not just Outpost. I too enjoyed Outpost back in the 2.x days, but then lost interest in the later versions...

I use the latest Outpost 4 Pro. Rock stable, does it's job wonderfully. I couldn't live without the BlockPost plugin either.

I turn off everything except Attack Detection and packet filtering though.

No HIPS like features, no content filtering, no Anti-Spyware etc... I have other programs to do those things.

Anyway thumbs up for Outpost 4

I don't want to go off topic but it seems that all my pay once software has come to the point that it just no longer works for me...

BOClean....gone. Adaware Plus...gone. Outpost...older version only, new version, buggy and bloated.

I suggest we all remember this when some security software company says pay once only or gives a lifetime license. BOClean was the best deal. :thumb: Outpost second at least older version still in use. I may try out something else soon. Adaware worst PC investment ever made. Glad that was only $20. All in all I think I got my money out of the first two.

It is a shame that 2008 does not work that well for me.... otherwise it would have been ideal as I prefer to use a standalone hips and AV

It is rather sad that so many lifetime lic holders are walking away .....:(

Yes it is a shame, I too have a lifetime license via beta testing the first firewall. Now I have used many to keep my systems safe on the net and am leaning towards Kaspersky as I am now beta testing v8 on Vista 64bit. It has all I need for security, v7 is very good too for those who would like to try it. I wonder why Agnitum decided to try and compete with blowtware? We all need a good AV/FW with the plug-in options to meet our needs and keep us safe on the net. Many companies seem to fudge on the abilities of there software or add 3rd party pop-ups ect. to help pay for? Our money speaks load and clear and Agnitum should be listening.

One post removed. Please stick to discussing the product itself and not how some other forum operates.

If a product meets your needs it does not matter if it is the most popular or a niche product. The only exception is if it goes so out of favor that it is discontinued.

That said, I always thought Outpost had fallen into the feature bloat trap. Additionally, there are enough excellent free firewalls out there to make it tough to sell any paid firewall.

    Hi,

Yes, with more than handful high quality freewares out there, it is very tough for any paid ware to rake in decent revenue, let alone staying above the water line. They need to do more, but the question is where can they get this "more" from ? Increasing its waist line is probably the only viable route. But, When this fails....... CASA falls.

I'm not conviced that the Outpost Firewall is full of bloat.... the suite maybe but the firewall is less bloated than say Comodo.

I guess part of my problem is that Outpost 2008 has so many problems that just don't seem to get fixed.... going back to version 4 is an option but I'd feel more confident in the product if the current version was more ?....finished

I have been using comodo 3 for about a week now ... I'm a Prosecurity/SSM/ProcessGuard user currently PS... the built in comodo hips is very capable. From a basic inspection it seems to rival PS or SSM. To me it seems more difficult to work out what is actually happening on the system but very impressive.

On balance I prefer Outpost with PS to Comodo but it needs to work so that......

means Comodo or outpost version 4 for me rather than 2008

    yes i agree
outpost is fading away gardually , and agnitum is no longer a leader in security products
many new members like comodo , online armor , jetico took the leadership right now
many outpost users " me one of them" shifted to other less buggy solutions
outpost = lots of bugs with no support
