This sounds really good. If it's going to have a free version, please make the real-time scanning optional. Or better yet, make a commandline scanner :)

Sad, but inevitable............................the dice was roled on the day you bought ewido, it was of course not to be continued in the long run, but i hope you would reconsider this decision to leave paying ewido users with no other option than either install an AVG suite where you can deselect options or simply to not use it at all.

Many used ewido as an extra layer of protection combining it with other vendors products and have no interest in using the other AVG products.................. :)

I agree with Don regarding the bootless future of AVG AS...

kodl, is there any chance for a refund of this product since, after your confirmation here about AVG AS future, I´ve regretfully bought a 2-year license for this product recently and I don´t want to use your other products in your suite since I already have this covered up.

    /C.

I also have just renewed my AVG AS licence and have no need for other parts of the suite, what are we supposed to do?

What a shame, this product blends so well with my system causing no problems or conflicts....how I will miss Ewido (as I still think of it):'(

Looks like we needn't have kicked up a fuss over those life licences - we won't be requiring them anyway. :'(

Just wait for this unannounced product to emerge, then make your decisions. It could be a real winner.

It may very well be a nice product... I won't address that point one way or the other. But why would one want to pay for and install an entire bulky security suite, and then disable all but one part of it? That makes no sense to me.

Contrary to what has been stated elsewhere, and as evidenced by the increasing flood of HJT logs on forums, we are seeing far more malware and malware attacks, not fewer, and they're getting nastier and harder to remove all the time.

I am not bound by any one product. I want a good, safe anti-spyware product with a small footprint that I can use myself and recommend to malware victims as well. I was looking for such a product when I found ewido. I can and will do the same once more.

One the reasons I don't recommend buying any vendors lifetime licence. I take it one year at a time.

I agree. I've had my fingers burned a time or two. I absolutely will not buy so-called "lifetime" licenses.

Does "soon" here mean within days, or is it meant in a context of something like geological or astronomical time?

There is a public beta available now, and beta2 will be coming out soon. I hope that answers the question...

The old product will be supported for quite some time still... but when it is about to expire (when it will not be possible to support it with updates to guarantee reliable protection), all existing users will be notified and appropriate options will be offered to all. Since this is still to far, I do not want to go into details now.

    @kodl

From what I have observed from recent AVG-AS logs posted at various malware removal sites, it would appear that AVG Anti-Spyware no longer removes malware such as Trojans.

Can you confirm or deny, please.

AVG AntiSpyware has not been limited in any way - it just has not been extended and no major development in the engine has been made. Still the same engine is used and the same detection types are being added. So definitely not true that it 'no longer removes malware such as Trojans'.
On the other hand, the new detection engine will obviously provide much better protection by using advanced heuristics and full coverage of all malware types.

Sorry, I don't understand your question now. I replied to a previous post, asking about Trojan removal capabilities.
The new engine detects all types of threats - not just a subset. So instead of an AS or AV (with a huge overlap in detection anyway), there will be only single engine with better detection capabilities. The old AS engine simply was not able to cope with the new threats. That is why there will be a new engine. And it does not make sense to differentiate 'viruses', 'spyware', 'trojans', .... anymore. It's all malware, blended threats so actually no way how to properly distinguish anymore, when creating the new engine. That's all.
I guess that those who do not like the idea of a single engine that covers both AV and AS threats, have already said so. Those who like it, will hopefully check the new AVG version. But no point in arguing more so I will not comment this particular issue here. All existing AS users will obviously have a chance to use the new version and all paying customers will be contacted before their license expires so that they can choose if they renew or not and which product they use.

Thanks for answering my question, kodl.

It is unfortunate, but empirical evidence appears to support the allegation that AVG-AS is not doing the thorough job it was known to do in the past... for whatever reason or reasons.

Regardless, that is a moot point as AVG-AS will eventually not be offered as a stand-alone version. Fortunately, for those who do not wish to migrate to a full-blown security suite, or just prefer to continue using their favorite anti-virus and/or firewall, at least one very promising stand-alone anti-spyware product will soon be emerging from beta testing. I'm sure others will follow.

    Nature abhors a vacuum.

If AVGAS is finished, why not just give the product back to Ewido? As a reseller, I can no longer recommend a product that I know will soon be defunct.

Sorry if I missed it somewhere--but will this all-in-one 8.0 have a free version? I looked at free.grisoft.com and couldn't tell--nor did the links to the 8.0 beta indicate.

Yes, and sorry if I did not make it clear enough - the new AVG Free edition will detect all kinds of malware, i.e. will incorporate the functionality of a standalone 'anti-spyware' and anti-virus.

Kodl, I'm glad to hear. Thanks. I'll d/l the beta (if you are letting any registered user install it) later and compare the footprint to my current setup (AVG AS and Windows Defender).

In other words, AVG free will be about the same thing as AVG AM is today. Very generous.
I wish if you can make an on-demand only version.

    AVG 8.0 Pro is out
    Comes 2 ways
one with AVG antivirus & Antispyware
One with AVG antivirus, antispyware and Firewall (and a bit more)
AVG free 8.0 will not be out for a few months yet
Also if you are upgrading take a look here

    http://www.grisoft.com/ww.faq.num-1148#faq_1148

Click on "I am using 7.5 how do i upgrade?
it will take you to a site where you put in your liscense

I have been beta testing 8.0 and I think it still needed some work before
they released it but overall it is pretty neat. It is a major change from
    7.5 in user enterphase.

this is the website if you want to read about the software

    http://www.grisoft.com/ww.homepage

first 7.5 (all versions) will be supported until the end of this year

if you have avg pro with firewall you will be updating to avg pro 8 with
firewall and it will contain the antispyware program in it.
if you have avg antispyware pro- you will be updating to AVG antivirus 8.0
Pro and it will have the antispyware program built into it.
If you have the 7.5 suite now you will also be getting the 8.0 suite
I suggest to wait a few weeks before doing this.
Grisoft informed me that you will see a popup in your program reminding you
that you need to upgrade. I suggest you use this to upgrade because it will
    uninstall the old program.
I do suggest you go to the website i gave you and get your new license
number for 8.0. this will also show you which version you will be getting.

Put it away somewhere so when it does popup you already have the license
    number.

For those who need their license number for AVG antivirus/firewall
double click the icon to open the program
    click on "Control Center"
Highlight "license" and click on the button at the bottom that says "copy"
    Open Notepad
click Edit/Paste or ctrl V and it will paste the license number in there
    Print it out

    For AVG antispyware
Right click on the icon in the right side of the taskbar
    Click on "Information"
It will show you the license number
Click on it and then click- copy to clipboard
    Open Notepad and
click Edit/Paste or ctrl V and it will paste the license number in there
    Print it out

    Thats it

    robin
