Firewall crashes MSN/Windows Live Messenger when trying to webcam

Every single time (100% repeatable) I try to view someone else's webcam while the ESS firewall is active MSN Windows Live Messenger freezes partway thru the setup of the webcam connection (usually about the time it says "you have accepted the invite").

Turning off the firewall sometimes makes it work... sometimes not.

Is there something I'm missing? Or is it that the ESS firewall is crap?

This issues has only occurred since installing ESS, I've never had any problems using the built-in Vista firewall.

    Vista Ultimate, latest patches.
    ESS 3.0.566
    MSN LiveWindows Live Messenger 8.5

Any help would be appreciated, otherwise I'll be uninstalling ESS, getting my money back & going back to plain old NOD32.

Hi and Welcome to Wilders !

    Cald down , man !

First , you use old version of your products - they are not too old but I strongly recommend you upgrade to the very latest and try again .

MSN Messenger is no longer developed . Microsoft have created Live Messenger - next generation Windows/MSN Messenger .
Uninstall your MSN 8.5 and download/install the very latest Live Messenger from here

Second , download and install ESET Smart Security 3.0.621
    http://www.eset.com/download

You can perform in-place upgrade and keep your settings.

Later , you need to open the GUI -> Web access protection -> Web browser and make sure that Windows Live Messenger has a red X next to it .

Confirm with OK and try again

Post again the results and tell us what mode of the firewall you use -> Automatic or Interactive

Re: Firewall crashes WLM when trying to webcam

I installed the latest update to ESS earlier today. Now on 3.0.621
I misnamed the product, it is indeed Windows Live Messenger 8.5, not MSN Live 8.5. Although, I would've thought that would be obvious.
I have modified the settings as shown in that image, and it still crashes.

I am using the firewall in interactive mode and have not been asked to open any ports. I have enabled up & down connections for WLM for both trusted & internet connections.

    Any more advice?

Open Personal firewall > Rules and zones > Zone and rule setup
Choose "Toggle detailed view of all riles" (if already not set to this)
Delete your Live Messenger rule (right click it and choose Delete)

Start creating new rule (use the button called "New")

    Name : your choice
    Direction : Both
    Action : Allow
    Protocol : TCP & UDP

    Additional action:
    check Log

In Local tab - do not enter any ports here . Just browse for WLM's exe file.
In Remote choose - do not touch here.

Confirm with OK . Press Apply button . Try again.

Done all of that, and it still freezes. I would think that something as simple as using the webcam with WLM would work out-of-the-box.

Generally it does . I am aware of client who uses ESS and WLM with no issues but perhaps there is something specific in your case .

Could you please contact ESET Tech Support dept. directly
Open the user interface -> Help -> Contact Customer care
Fill in the information (+ include a link to this thread here at Wilders) , press Next , allow ESS to gather information about your system and itself and finish the procedure . Ensure your computer has internet in the next 2-3 minutes till it send the request to ESET .

Hope they can help you :thumb:

Wish you all the best in 2008 :thumb:
