A few days ago I found the (beta) free AVP tool from Kaspersky. There are no real-time protection modules, auto scans, or auto update features. However the definitions are updated several times each day and a new 'build' is placed on their FTP. By default it will install to the desktop and run as a service so that each time you reboot it will launch the program. While this is semi-annoying you can simply disable the service. To uninstall or update to a new build simply click the 'Complete Antivirus Protection' link in the bottom right corner of the program.

The Kaspersky Online Scanner will only detect malware, so this tool is a real blessing for those wanting a second opinion, or a second on-demand scanner, with superior detection and removal capabilities. Be sure to download the latest version each time you need it.

Having incremental updates would be like giving a full blown on-demand scanner, I guess.

And what difference does it make now? I don't care on my end with 4Mbit line but if they like to be hammered by milions of users downloading entire pack all the time then i'm fine with it. Full blown would be with real-time scanner, which is not in this case...

I seem to recall reading that if you already use KIS or KAV you should not install/use this (not sure why you would want to) as I believe that it could cause problems. Is this still the case?

No. This tool works in the same fashion as Dr. Web's CureIt. They are simply standalone (offline) malware scanners that operate in a similar fashion to the free online activeX Virus scanners from Eset, Bitdefender, Panda, etc.

AVG Free still offers real-time protection, automatic updates, scheduler, etc. which is lacking in this free tool from Kaspersky. Now you can have your favorite AV in real-time and use the AVP tool as an "on demand" scanner. :)

    Yes.

what's nice is the integrated AVZ (it's like a hijackthis, you can make a log send it for a check and get run the script you recieve to manually remove malware)

Just remember it is still a beta version and is currently incompatible with KAV/KIS. It is only an on-demand scanner and should only be used as a second opinion... an additional layer of security over your existing antivirus and NOT a substitute for an existing real-time AV.

Also, there's no point using it if your antivirus uses the KAV engine eg, KAV/KIS, F-secure, AVK, eScan.

it shouldn't (pointless for such a tool), but since it's a cropped kis/kav i think they didn't remove it yet.

It took 19 minuts to scan my system partition and tell me : "No threats found". Too slow.

For all we know you have 1TB of information. If it actually found some malware would you still be complaining? :doubt:

I ran KVRT to verify my approach. In theory, I knew already in advance, KVRT wouldn't find anything, but I like to know it for sure in practice.
Besides, I'm not the only user who protects his system without using scanners.

Does it screw up attributes like kav/kis does?
