plain/basic/simple firewall required,any suggestions?

which is the most basic firewall?
some programs require internet access,and others don't - i need a firewall only to do this job of allowing/disallowing
i have tried zonealarm,outpost and others - i couldn't figure them out
so i have settled with armor2net,so far,it is the only firewall that i understand.
are there any other simple/basic firewalls which a computer novice can comfortably use?

So your looking for a FW with app control.
But you need to give more info like your OS.
Free or paid?

 

Try Look 'n' Stop with the Network Filtering part disabled. This will provide very simple software allow/deny prompts.

Edit: Use it with the built in Windows Firewall

Sygate uses only Allow/Deny prompts, along with being very light.

 

You could try the free ashampoo firewall.

 

Then I would say Look'n'Stop.

If you already have a router for inbound protection, you could try Proxy Firewall to control applications from connecting out.

 

plain/basic/simple firewall is a good description for the in-built Windows XP SP2 firewall.
now that you've got inbound (one of the best inbound, IMO) covered, you can use OA Free (with a rule to allow all inbound) for outbound (one of the best outbound). That is if you care about leaktests, I don't.

 

In its operation Comodo 2.4 is very simple. Just allow or deny, that's it. It will work fine without custom rules.

 

Online Armor Free (2.1.50 or higher !!) or CFP 2.4 (Comodo 3.0 looks plain and simple only at the first sight but at the second sight it has many features which require the user that he/she knows what he/she does )

Online Armor Free should be installed in Build 50 or higher since older Builds had some Problems with games (high pings etc) . It has (basic) key-logger protection / HIPS and does all jobs of a classic firewall without popping up to much . Read matousec.com if you want to go deeper .



Btw. Mike - World of Warcraft doesn't run very smooth even with this current build of OA. The occassional stuttering of sound / TS-communication is still there
