I can't find FD-ISR to buy on Raxco's website, and after reading here it seems that it might be discontinued, is that true?
Is there another product that is almost as good that does the same thing? What should I do? o_O

    FDISR Workstation is terminated forever.
Rollback Rx + clones, like Eaz-Fix are closest to FDISR Workstation.

I got lucky, I guess, for a change. Had I not taken notice of this part of Wilders, I'd never have remembered I'd bought fdisr a year ago, and wouldn't have gotten the Raxco Build 205 update. I got it barely a week or so ago.

Even if I hadn't though, I think I'd be well served using the older Build 173. It, too, runs very nicely on my computer.

The differences between build 173 and 205 are :
    - compressed snapshots, which are hardly used by FDISR-users. (20-25% less space usage)
    - Partition Boot Record (PBR) instead of Master Boot Record (MBR) which was a useful improvement
    - winVISTA compatibility.

This is important for those using boot managers/loaders and having dual/multi-boot (Windows/Linux/BSD/Solaris)

Thanks lucas and eric. I will never willingly going to Vista, only have xp pro sp2 on this machine, and haven't looked into compressed snapshots yet since I have more disk space than I can ever possibly use on my two hard drives.

Knocking on wood, saying prayers to the Fates, etc, I'm hoping this fairly new machine will survive for 4 or 5 more years. By then, who knows what technology will be like?

I concur. I think the same way. Alot can happen in the software world during 4-5 years. We have nothing to do, than waiting patiently ...

Hello everyone. Pepperer, maybe you should say what use you had planned for FDISR. Most of its capabilities can be accomplished in other ways with other software.

For not quite as fast restore from the same drive, you can use an imaging program like Acronis or Ghost. For booting to multiple operating systems, you can use a boot manager. For freezing your system drive, you can use Returnil or ShadowDefender. FWIW I've never tried Rollback because I'e heard that it severely limits the effectiveness of imaging applications.

You can't buy FDISR anymore, so what's the purpose to give an explanation ?
Rollback Rx + clones is the only alternative for multiple snapshots.
DeepFreeze, Returnil, etc. are simple boot-to-restore solutions.

He asked, "Is there another product that is almost as good that does the same thing?" I wanted to know which "same thing" he means. FD-ISR can be used in many ways for many different purposes.

For example, he probably doesn't need the freeze functionality, which almost no one uses. But maybe he does want to boot a Linux snapshot. I don't think Rollback is practical for that. Also, counter to what you say, every imaging program can take multiple snapshots; you probably mean multiple boot to restore snapshots. But he hasn't said yet that 2 minute versus 20 minute restores is what's important to him.

Linux is impossible. FDISR is only compatible with win2000pro, winXP and winVISTA, all NTFS only.
RollbackRx can only handle ONE operating system and Linux is not one of them either.

RollBack Rx Professional Version 8.1 - NEW
Roll-Back System Restore Software Supports Windows 98, Me, 2000, XP and XP 64 bit, VISTA

If I am not mistaken, and I must admit that I have never tried this, with the latest version of FD you can indeed boot back and forth between WinXP and Vista ... is this not powerful or what ... if I am wrong I apologize in advance, like I said, I have never tired this (nor have the desire to do so; I ain't got the guts or courage of Peter or Erik :ninja: )

Keep in mind that this is a FDISR-forum.
RollbackRx is discussed in the forum "Software & Services".
Otherwise we get in trouble with the moderators.

The worst that can ever happen is you restore from your imaging application. Not a big deal.

WinXP Pro and Vista Ultimate (and Win2000 fwiw) running in different FD-ISR snapshots for a few months already without a glitch. iirc, that worked with 173 version as well.

(Not that I boot into Vista very frequently (hardly at all), but what the heck...)

    Thanks GarySugar.

I have Ghost ,and love it, and make images every once in a while, but the images are pretty big (~13GB+ min. after I move most data to an external HD), and they take a while to make and restore.

Basically I was looking for (and I thought FD-ISR was) a quick and easy Ghost, where if something went wrong I could quickly restore everything to a previous state except MyDocs\*.* and maybe other specified folders.

The "freezing" concept seems like something that would be helpful, too. For my use I'd like to keep it frozen (except for MyDocs) most of the time for security (and to protect all configs from my wife accidentally changing anything, or from her accidentally allowing/downloading/installing malware) then I could "thaw"(?) while I'm on the PC to allow sw updates (MS, AV, etc). Returnil looks interesting except that you have to reboot to turn it off. Also, for usability I'd need to repartition my HD and move MyDocs to another drive, and it seems like there might be more, unforeseen, complications too.

I think I read somewhere that sw encryption can cause a problem for these types of programs so maybe I should mention that I have a few Truecrypt encrypted "drives" that I use for some of the data. (the encrypted "drive" files are in my MyDocs)

    Thanks.

Glad it is working for you

I'm interested in doing this, too.

Is there any advantage to having different OS's in different snapshots over a conventional dual boot system employing different partitions? Usually, Microsoft recommends that you install the earlier OS first and then later releases after that. I guess that doesn't matter if you use a snapshots.

Hey guys, what's up with the thread hijacking? I was trying to ask a question and get advice and some people are completely off topic. Can't you post a thread for your discussion? That's what I did.

I guess Rollback is your best remaining option I don't know if it works with TrueCrypt - FDISR doesn't mind TrueCrypt on my computer. There is a long thread on Rollback here. Be sure to make a good image before you try it. I hope it will work for you.
