After using Avira AntiVir, now I'm back to Avast Home. AntiVir has lots of false positive detections that it detects even some of the ordinary files that was not infected. AntiVir is light on my pc but I think the new Avast is now also lighter...and I only uses the Standard Shield and Web Shield provider to protect my system, and I think its VRDB feature is great in repairing infected files in case there are some. ;) Avast update is also fast even on dial-up connections. :thumb:

I haven't used a resident AV since 2005. The combination of SSM free, Kerio 2.1.5, and Proxomitron has been 100% effective in keeping all malicious code from affecting my system, no matter where I browse. The 3 combined apps also use far less disk space and system resources than any resident AV. For scanning individual files, I upload them to VirusTotal.

As far as the poll question, for resident protection, I don't use any. For file scanning, I use them all.

With the introduction of HIPS + Sandboxes + ISR's + Virtualizers, i'll never run a resident AV again. Over a year or so without them and not even a nibble, but i do use NOD32 for On-Demand only and only for research purposes. I like it's common detections rate and have benefitted from it's virus "cleaning" engine during testings.

    I replaced
    - all Anti-Virus scanners
    - all Anti-Spyware scanners
    - all Anti-Trojan scanners
    - all Anti-Keylogger scanners
    - all Anti-Rootkit scanners
    - all Anti-Whatever scanners
    - all on demand scanners

with one single "Anti-Change Scanner" in order

    - to remove any known malware
    - to remove any unknown malware
    - to remove any malware in the future
    - to avoid daily signature updates
    - to avoid false positives
    - to reduce the number of scanners
    - to reduce the total scan-time in less than 2 minuts.
    - to increase the number of scans.
    - to get listed in the AV-comparatives as advanced+ scanner with a 100% detection rate.
    - to get the VB100% sticker.

Tried Avira Antivir and it sucks. I'll keep using Nod32, nothing can beat it.
The problem with Avira is that it has too many false-positives.

The thing thats so ingenious of Nod32 is that it has the BEST combination of these three factors:
    -detection rate
    -accuracy
    -speed

I currently use Avira AntiVir PE Premium and love it - It seems the lightest on resources yet has excellent detection rates. I have not had a single false positive result, and thats with heuristics and guard on "Highest" with over 300GB of files.

With so many saying good things about Antivir I thought I would give it a go.
I haven't used an antivrus program real time for about 10 months now.

The first thing I tested was program loading times - it was like going back to an old machine 9 seconds to load rather than 6 -- very noticeable.

Then I ran a scan and came up with DF6Std1818.exe which was reported as a Trojan.Generic.58452.

To be fair to Antivir when I ran the file thru VirusTotal and Viruscan.org it was also mistakenly picked up by Ikarus, Prevx1, Webwasher-Gateway and more surprisingly by Bitdefender 7.2

None of the serious programs could find a problem.

Edit - I have written to Faronics to tell them that there program is being picked up incorrectly. I hope they see the funny side of it.

I was concerned that Bitdefender showed a problem then realised that version 7 was being used. Ran it thru version 10 and Bitdefender found no problem.
