Antivirus for Grandparents?

ok, im looking for an AV that does not pop-up a lot, pretty low maintenance, something that someones grandparents can use and wont be overwhelmed. and it needs to be free, btw they have Windows XP

I have to put in a vote for Avast over AVG simply because I believe it will protect a little better than AVG. Both are nearly zero maintenance though. So either would do fine.

 

Well, Avast has the little "quirk" of reactivation via mail each year. If they can manage this, I'd choose Avast over AVG.

I recommend Alwil Avast! Home or Avira Avira PE Classic (plus some antispyware, because free version doesn't include spyware/adware protection, attention POP3 scanning misses). You have to set up automatic cleaning of malware.

 

Most of m friends who do not use the OEM AV have gone to AVG free. I have not used it, but they are all pleased with it.
I have used and like Avast Home.

I would recommend you try both and see what runs best on your system. If you do not want to try both, then go with AVG free.

Since they probably are not big on downloading and installing third-party software, by far the best protection is to just run WinXP in a limited user account. All the usual MS software (IE7, Outlook Express) will work OK. I administer a PC 700 miles away that I visit every couple of years, and there is no problem at all. Automatic updates from MS take care of any other problems.
You really needn't bother with an AV in that case, though I have used avast!, AVG and AntiVir in a limited user account with no problem.

Yes, for real.

My personal experiences at setting up Limited User Accounts for newbies have all been positive so far. I'm now convinced it's perhaps the best security solution you can do for a less technically-inclined friend.

 

Grandparents=clueless is the explicit assumption.

The original poster could have left the reference to 'grandparents' out.

 

Use AVG free. I use this on our computer at Church & it works almost without any need of user intervention. AVAST would be too much for them. Your grandparents don't want to adjust anything nor do they need all the protections that Avast offers. AVG performs almost as well also.

 

Avast is better then AVG by far. If you put Avast in slient mode,combine the icons, and stop the spinning "a" you have no idea its there.

 

I agree. And it is the best for very technically-inclined users also. The only difference is that the latter install a lot of third-party software that won't work by default in a Limited User Account. I have spent years learning how to do it, but if you ask on most security forums, most people won't attempt it.

 

Can you give us some cold figures and facts,rather than your meaningless personal opinions,as usual.

Be objective-not subjective-look it up in the dictionary.

Back on track-AVG is a good safe choice.

Easy to use GUI-quiet and unobtrusive and rates well.

Of course-auto updates and an auto scanning scheduler.

Scans in the background without too much of a performance hit.
