    Decided to give ZA a try. I am quite amazed by the lightness of it. Hardly noticed a difference with windows firewall...

    The rest is unchanged. See my sig.

    So, does CounterSpy have the same amount of protection as SpySweeper?

    Comodo 2.4

    AV de jour. I keep changing signature AV's for free trials etc. Why pay a lot when the entire concept is defective?

    Threatfire when I feel paranoid.

    Firefox with addblock plus.

    Limited user account in XP.

    Lots of experience and skepticism.

    Shotguns, rifles, pistols etc. You can't be too safe.

    -My next setup:

    Hardware Firewall

    Returnil, EQSecure, Sandboxie

    Outlook -> Thunderbird
    Explorer -> Firefox
    Messenger -> Pidgin

    -Installing order:

    Windows XP [Custom]
    Drivers
    Programs

    Tweaks

    Clean

    Activate Returnil

    Connect to Internet

    -I use Thunderbird, Firefox and Pidgin inside of Sandboxie. I shutdown computer every evening so in the morning it's clean. Now I have some basic questions.

    1. What tools I should use to clean computer before activating Returnil?

    2. Returnil protects System Drive. I want to also protect Data Drive (Same Hard Drive, Other Partition). What free possibilities I have? I just want that programs ask "are you sure?" if you try to delete, edit, rename or anything some of those files or folders.

    3. Should I use some Registry/File/Startup/etc. tracking/monitoring software if I always use activated Returnil?

    4. Should I use some cleaners software if I always use activated Returnil?

    5. What else I should/could add to my next setup? I don't like active AV, AS, AT or anything like those. I just want light and fast setup with good security.

    -MikeNAS

    PS. Sorry if I add this to wrong thread. I just thought that this one is right place to post setup + questions.

    First toptenreviews is not exactly trustyworthy. Secondly ANY review/comparative should only be used as a guideline; not as a deciding factor.

    NOD32 and Avira have proven to be excellent AV. And for a freebie, avast is good choice between AVG and Avira.

    Desktop and Laptop At Home:

    Router (WRT54G) with NAT, MAC list, WPA2, No-Broadcast
    Norton Internet Security 2008
    Norton AntiBot 2008
    Vista with UAC=On

    Laptop Using Public WiFi:

    Norton Internet Security 2008
    Norton AntiBot 2008
    Vista with UAC=On
    SandboxIE with file-view restrictions
    AnchorFree (SSL) or Cisco (IPSec) VPN

    In both cases, scans with on-line tools like Prevx CSI immediately prior to doing system image backups periodically. Just one extra check which costs zero money and very little time.

    I believe that good security is possible using only Vista Firewall, Windows Defender along with occasional AV scans (plus sandbox/VPN in public). However in order to use my employer's VPN I must be running commerical protection and since NIS 2008 seems to run lightly without much nagging I choose to live with it rather than fight that policy. When I purchased NIS there was an offer of AntiBot for just $11 more so what the heck it can't hurt either.

    -Inbound Protection: Modem-Router Firewall (SPI, NAT etc.).
    -Inbound Protection + Outbound Protection: Online Armor Firewall v2 (free).
    -Sandbox: SafeSpace.
    -System Recovery: Acronis TrueImage.

    Why? Because, I don't trust the AntiViruses/AntiSpywares anymore:

    ->Too many False Positives!
    ->Inadequate Search Engines!
    (based on Poor and/or Outdated definitions in spite of what the vendors say).
    Even multi-engined AntiViruses have failed to protect their users!
    Runnning a single Antivirus is not enough! You need to have at least another one on-demand!
    ->Weak Heuristics that cannot effectively deal with most of the new malware!
    ->Time-consuming & Resource-hogging Updates and Scan sessions!
    ->Conflicting Anti-Virus Test results: Which one to believe? Are they reliable?

    Excuse me, but I have a life to live...

    212eta, can't agree with everything you say at this point but I give you credit for stating your opinion firmly as to what you think.

    LoneWolf I just noticed you have both geswall and sandboxie running together, I am curious to how are you using each particular program?
