Hi Guys.

Was just checking features of my dlink and found that it has the possibility to use following software: http://sentinel.dlink.com/SecurityServices/

Anyone knows anything about? What AV engine are they using?

Have not tried it yet, but maby I'll give it a go

[EDIT] Found out that its software that must be installed on the computer - thought it was on the router

 

im pretty sure it uses Sophos.

 

That actually sounds like a great idea. Have your security installed on your router so as not to slow down your comp. Is there anything like this for home users. Or is it a stupid idea?

 

I think Trend Micro and Netgear had/has something like this. Not sure how it works though.

The concept is very simple: upgrade your "el cheapo" home router to a full blown security appliance worth hundreds/housands of dollars:
- Far better performance.
- Hardened Linux/BSD.
- Full SPI firewall.
- IDS (Snort).
- Antivirus scanning.
- Antispam.
- Content filtering.
- VPN.
- Etc.

In fact it's a great idea, if you understand its limitations and don't become reckless forgetting basic security practices.

The $150 price tag seems reasonable enough. The $70 yearly subscription for updates is a bit of an ouch.

 

Interesting idea but it seems too 'blackboxish' for me (no pun intended). eBBox's question is the first thing that came to my mind: "Sounds great but what is actually under the covers?".

I don't think there's any one software vendor out there that consistently performs well covering all the bases (a/v, firewall, antispam, etc)...so having some arbitrary branded software inside the box doesn't sound great to me...I think I'll stick to my own blend thank you very much
