    Hi everyone,

I have acronis true image 9.1 and trying to make a bootable DVD to restore images (i actually also want to make a bootable usb key)

    1. Bootable dvd

Basically, i want in one dvd (more than one if needed) a tib image (sysprep image in this case, already created) and the boot files (from the acronis rescue media builder) so that a user can put in a DVD, boot from it and then restore the image from the dvd...

i think its more complicated than putting the tib file and the acronis boot files all together in one DVD

    1. Bootable USB

perfect worl in one big usb key, user inputs usb key in pc, boots from usb, acronis loads and then restores tib image from usb key but if not possible i couldnt even make work a usb key bootable with acronis if i wanted to restore the image from a dvd ( when i chose boot from usb nothing happens)

thanks for any help you can give

    sofiane

Never done it but in the Create Wizard in the options screen there is a place where you can have Acronis Media components placed on the DVD with the image. This will make the DVD bootable.

Some users have made bootable USB keys. Try searching the forum. Have a look here as a starting point:

I'm not sure if ver 9.1 had the feature to combine the Rescue CD with the Backup Image on to a DVD, but there's a whole thread here on an alternative way to do it, using something like UltraISO if memory serves.

    Hello benzaza,

The (lengthy) thread DwnNdrty is referring to is titled How to create bootable rescue DVD(s):. Suggest you check out Page 2 Post #26, Page 7 Post #171 and Page 11 Post #256 & #269 therein.

This topic is coming up more and more. Perhaps that thread should be made a Sticky.

Hang on, these two statements don't seem to make sense together. What's more complicate than putting the tib file and acronis boot files all together in one DVD? I thought that's exactly what you just said you wanted to do.

A 'lengthy thread' has been mentioned. I'm not sure that lengthy thread is necessarily what you want. THAT is all about creating ISO images. This may not be necessary for you, may well overcomplicate things, and will artificially limit the capacity of the DVDs you use to 2GB each.

You will see on a very recent thread that I have been discussing how to achieve what I think you want to do with Menorcaman, amongst others. As you will see from that thread creating what you want is actually very simple, but if you want to restore at boot up (rather than windows) you'll need to write your image to DVD+or-RWs if you're using Workstation 9.1 as a result of a bug (can't use DVD+or-Rs).

The procedure is to go into Acronis 9.1, pick the 'backup task' and go through the wizard. Near the end select 'manual', and look for the 'media' section in the next menu. Select the 'media' section, look to the right and click 'advanced'. Tick the bits of Acronis you want to be put on the disk (these will give it bootability). While you're in the 'manual' section you might like to configure 'priority' and 'compression' as well. Now click next, then proceed. Insert your DVD+RWs one by one (or DVD-RWs).

When you've finished, insert 'Volume 1', restart your machine having made sure that the DVD drive is high up the boot order, and you should find that you boot into the Acronis user interface. Select Acronis, then backup, then select your DVD and look to see the .tib file as recognised inside it. If you do see it, then you can cancel (unless you actually want to restore). Next select 'verify' and check your image is intact. Now you're done.

On the USB, I'd better defer to what everyone else has to say, as I haven't done any research on this.

Edit: Comment removed. Menorcaman obviously doesn't agree with me, I may be wrong.

I just asked whether 'that' thread on creating bootable DVDs isn't perhaps a little indigestible for a new person, and/or may contain methods which it is no longer necessary to use. I need to read that thread more thoroughly, but its gonna take a while!

What is the need to create ISO DVDs? (genuine question) I've created what seem to be perfectly functional .tib DVDs that appear bootable, and have the added advantage of using the full 4GB on the DVD (not just 2GB).

Ah but it already is!! You will find it included under the link "Creating Bootable Rescue DVD(s) Prior to TI 9.0 Build 3625" in the forum sticky titled Product Links, FAQs & Useful Forum Threads. Lots of very useful, hard won, information in that sticky that is reviewed and update if I or other members think it necessary.

    Hey martin,

i read your post and got lost a little bit but its also cuz im reading into the forum as i am very exhausted

but everyone is pointing than an iso solution that looks the solution until the contrary is proved...

the sysprep image is in.tib format and if i understand you correctly, you have a dvd with the boot files and the tib image (in the same dvd, dvd-rw in this case)

so someone pops in the dvd, chooses boot from dvd after frantically pressing f12 (;) chooses the correct acronis boot option (in this case true image) and choose the restore option and choose the tib in that same dvd you are booting from.?

i tried to first created a boot dvd using the acronis rescue media builder and then copying the tib image (dvdrw actually) into that same dvd....the tib file wouldnt show...vice versa first tib file then boot...the dvd wouldnt boot...ill do more tests tommorow and post back and ill try the iso part too and well see

    thx mate

From the expieriments I have done, if you have an ISO editing program example "ultraISO" which is what I have use. You can use that to create an ISO of any boot cd. Now you can open that ISO up and add any extra files you want into it, next you save it (change the name to something otherwise your original ISO will be overwritten). If the original ISO was of a cd and you save it to a DVD size file, that DVD will be bootable since it will have the original boot files in there. From my expireiments the added files won't affect the bootup of the original ISO files. Thats one way of doing what you want to do.
