Cloning and changing drive letters

I want to clone a hard drive having 2 partitions. Will acronis ti 9 allow me to remove the drive letters from the source hard drive during cloning? Source and destination drives are sata. TI 9 because some users say this version is adequate.

 

The program won't allow you to remove the drive letters, but it will allow you to delete the source drive during cloning though. Make sure you leave that block unchecked. It is best to leave your source drive as is, until after you know that your cloned drive will boot up the computer.

Rule number 1 is to remove the source drive after the cloning is complete (before the first bootup of the cloned drive) to prevent the drive letters on the cloned drive from changing. If the new cloned hard drive hangs during the logon screen during bootup, thats a sign that the drive letters have been changed.

I use true image 9.0 and for use with windows xp it is more than adequate, you just need to be able to know how to control and change drive letters on a non-booting cloned drive. Drive letter change problems is the only problem I ever ran into, but it's a 5 minute fix with the right utilitys.

 

I cloned using Apricorn's EZ Gig 11 software. This software doesn't allow me to adjust drive letters. After clone source drive has partitions E and F (same as before cloning) and destination drive C and E. I want source drive to have a C for the boot partition. Plan to purchase acronis ti 9 to see if it will do this.

 

I know true image version 9 and 10 won't change the drive letters on the source drive but have a limited ability to change it on the destination cloned drive. If all you want to do is change drive letters following a cloning (of either the source or cloned drive), my advice is to get "paragon justboot corrector".

That program is burned to a cd and you use it to boot up your computer. It'll go into the registry of your sytem hard drive and change your drive letters on all your hard drive partitions and dvd roms. I've used it with windows xp pro and it works everytime, it's best to release all the drive letters first than assigned them all and make sure you remember what the system drive letter should be (if you change the system drive letter the computer won't boot).

It usually takes less than 5 minutes to change your drive letters (using simple mouse commands) before your ready to reboot. The Demo of the program will let you play around with the features but it won't apply any changes.

"paragon justboot corrector" and "avanquest partition commander version 10" are the only two programs that I have used to change drive letters on non-booting hard drive (both have boot cd's that can read and write to the registry). There are free ways to do it but they require you to use the windows repair console and input dos commands. Very time comsumming and you don't always get the results you want.
