I liked everything about OA Free and had no troubles running it with AVG and ThreatFire, and I was going to use it again. However since I was now going to use Avira Personal, I guess I'm going to have to stick with Webroot Desktop Firewall/DSA. Although both are great programs, it kills me to have do this becaue I am in favor of the little guy and not "Big Business". (Webroot, Privacyware) I will add that if I had the money I would without doubt use the paid version of Online Armor, but unfortunately that's just not in the cards for me at this time.

This is so true. There is a considerable need to know - in detail - what the free version does.

It would be even better to complete the help file, and point out the features available in the paid version only. Did I say this before? :cautious:

Why don't you try with Avira? Several of our beta team use this with no dramas. Just mark the avira exes as trusted and you're good to go.

And - if you get stuck, we always try to resolve compatibility issues.

i fully agree that very detailed informations about differences between free, normal and normal + should be done...

i mean the chart atm 'give hints' but w/o actual knowledge of the product it's just vague

what about screenshot comparsion (e.g. difference between advanced and simple mode etc).

ideally each of the feature on 'comparsion' table should be clickable url leading to 'detailed' explaining' what's that feature

p.s. i would like to ask if installed 'trial' version of OA expires it's trial then switches into OA free mode w/o hitch ?
(sorta like Avast! Pro after 60days trial seamless switch into Avast! home)

I found a strange quirk in the program guard.

It somehow works strange with autorun because it keeps asking for an inserted
CD after I inserted one. And without a cd in the tray a message pops op every time I open the program guard tab that there is no cd in drive X and keeps doing that even if I press cancel.

I had to deactivate the program guard because it became very o_O annoying.

    What could this be o_O

When you allowed "autorun", did you set it to remember the ruleo_O If not, it will ask each time Windows checks for cd...

Hi everybody. I got curious and installed Online Armor free today.

Congratulations to the folks who released fine looking software.
I'm impressed already by the ease of use.

I have a question... I'll give some details first...

Mostly I wanted to try the process guard, since I am comfortable with Comodo right now, and I'm a bit of a newbie when it comes to processes. So I turned off Online Armor firewall to minimize conflicts and took it for a spin.

I don't remember the sequence of events, but while browsing with Opera I got several messages from Comodo asking me for permission to let oawatch.dll and oasrv.exe access the net. (This was "unprovoked", I did not launch the Online Armor homepage from the program interface, for example.)
Specifically: oawatch.dll wanted to do UDP out, parent: explorer.exe
and oasrv.exe wanted to do TCP out, parent: services.exe

I've denied them access, and all is quiet now. But what is going on here from Online Armor free?

Well, let's look at the ways that OA accesses the internet, and why:

    1) Updates - To check for updates, and to download them.
    2) Trusted DNS - to verify that for banking sites your local DNS resolution matches another trusted DNS server.
    3) Lookup of addresses on the firewall status screen.
    4) Sharing info with database about programs you trust

All of these - aside from (3) and (4) are not enabled in OA - so if it wasn't these, then I am going to shoot for a bug in Comodo with process identification.

Specifically, I think that Comodo is misidentifying OA due to OA's injecting of DLLs into other processes and Comodo not dealing with that properly.

    Hey Mike,

I mentioned that the Online Armor Free was buggy .. I wasn't able to click on the Antivir Antivirus icon on the system tray w/out crashing and Sandboxie was a no go too. It took forever for my system to load up to add on the list. I had Online Armor installed on a clean computer system (I reformatted my computer earlier today). The system took forever to load up w/out the antivirus and sandboxie installed. I downloaded both programs with the antivirus first. I made sure every .exe was highlighted when it asked me and clicked everything for a yes. I clicked on the Antivir icon on the system tray and it gave me the access violation error box with a bunch of numbers. I downloaded Sandboxie next and it crashed while using IE and Opera separately.

So I decided to download the trial version of Online Armor and presto everything works fine! I'm wondering what gives?!

I did get the same errors when I installed Threatfire with the paid trial version. TF wasn't on my system when I tried the OA Free version.

If you PM me, I'd be happy to give you a full version of OA in exchange for you running a few tests and helping us track down whatever went on with your system.

Just to say to everyone: If you uninstall OA due to a bug, it's our policy - help us find and fix it, and OA is free.

I have OA2 paid and have used Avira AntiVir PE free and now Premium and Sandboxie with no problems. I'm not sure what is causing the problems in the free version of OA. I'm sure that it will be solved soon :).

    Thanks for your reply.

Yes I did. It happens with every CD with an autoruns feature.

Even with program guard off, when I hit the programs tab in configuration. It immediately asks for a CD o_O

By the way, Spyware terminator does not give any problems with CD's with autorun.

Hi Mike, - nice to see a rapid reply. Thanks :)

I don't think Comodo would bother me with these "injection warnings" but currently I have the warning level set to "totally anal" for the fun of learning.

I am just trying to discover what OA is doing.

In the General options I have the following:

    Check for updates: Manual only
unchecked: Send anonymous info about programs

As I understand it, online banking mode is not available in OA free. (And in Opera I have Fraud Protection turned off)

Again, I'm just learning about this stuff:
Why is OA injecting DLLs into other processes when it's supposedly idle?
Or if it's a bug, why would Comodo 'think' it was doing this, in association with the browser?

I'm not trying to be overly critical here: I'm looking for an app that will work for my "tween" nieces, they click "OK, SURE!" everytime Kerio sends them a warning. I think OA is the thing for them, and I want to be sure.

    There it just happened again:
I just did a google search w/Opera and Comodo gives me this message:
There are unknown components in opera.exe that require approval [blah blah blah]. The component is oaevent.dll

The way injection works is that when a process starts, it's injected - so that it can be monitored/managed. It's not that OA is constantly "doing stuff" but rather that it is waiting in the wings for something to happen.

Think of a set of points on a railway track - they have to be there to divert the train , but they can be for the most part just pointing in one direction.

Not my best analagy - but I hope you get the idea

    Ok, fair enough.

    Thanks for the nice product.

Just one more question, then it's time to put the kids PC under the knife.

I've learned "advanced mode" is probably available in the paid version only... Where is the "Run Safer" option?

Advanced Mode firewall is unavailable in Free, but Advanced Mode settings on programs (including runsafer) is available.
