Well if indeed my understanding is correct, then for me it is far from
For me the product is already dead in the water, I will continue to use the one's I have and keep a lookout for a replacement solution.

Looks to me like Leapfrog has been taken over by HDS, certainly FD-ISR has been castrated.

The next HDS step : DriveVaccine and FDISR Rescue look alike, so we ditch FDISR Rescue also.

    Agree.

Unfortunately there isn't any other ISR software in my book that comes anywhere near close to FD-ISR in (previous) functionality so I will stay with it until there is a viable alternative for me.

Very, very sad that such a good software should be sacrificed to market expediencies.

FDISR Rescue is now like Returnil, DeepFreeze, etc.

No 10 bootable snapshots anymore, which means no different work environments anymore. Everything on ONE harddisk.
    No unlimited archives anymore
    No freeze storage anymore.

When M$ launches a new Windows, the old FDISR won't be adjusted and that means FDISR will die one day.

Back to the drawing board, not rightaway, but on long term I have to find another solution.
So I have to say "Goodbye off-line snapshot and goodbye on-line snapshot."

Where is Todd, I would certainly appreciate some explanation from his part (at least the compagny that he represent)?

Even with further reflection I cannot see any commercial logic to this move from Leapfrog's point of view.

By removing all these features FD-ISR will no longer be any use to software testers or for most home users.
In effect it becomes a competitor for shadowing programs for the average home user and will ultimately lose out big time as Returnil is free & Shadow Defender is a lot cheaper than FD-ISR.

The newly gelded FD-ISR can only really be useful for business/ corporate users & there it already faces stiff competition from other softwares.

I know we have moaned about progressive bloat from software in the past but this is the 1st time I have ever seen software 'defunctioning'.

Suddenly there is a big gap in the market and if I was looking to make a niche product I think I'd know exactly what to do.

Well sorry you guys think it is bad news. I think we will have to wait and see what happens. Unfortunately I can't say anymore at this time. One way or another I think good things will come of this.

    Thanks,

    Chris

    Hi Chris,

I would like to know why you think good things will come of this or maybe I miss something?

    Thanks,

That we all become RollbackRx-users or DriveVaccine-users. Is that the good news ?

I am afraid I don't see any excitement at all in this. I have no problem with paying for support, but the way I see it is FDISR has been raped by HDS, with Leapfrogs permission. I understand HDS, but I am not sure I understand Leapfrog. I sure hope Todd steps in.

Frankly taking archives out of FDISR trashes it pure and simple.

Must admit that this really has me scratching my head. I've used FD for over three years, since before it even had Archiving. Even then it was a great program because I could still have up to 10 bootable Snapshots (which is actually how many I was using). It was this great FLEXIBILITY that I often talked about in the early days of this FirstDefense forum.

Now it appears that this flexibility is to be removed and make a program not too much more powerful than GoBack or RestoreIt. And back to the Archiving issue, Archiving made this already great program even better for at least three reasons that I am aware of: 1. Updating an Archive or using an Archive to restore a problem is faster than using a bootable Snapshot (this is assuming that the Archive is on another hard drive).

    2. The number of Archives that you can have is only limited by your hard drive space.

    3. For the first time, although I have never needed to use FD for this reason, FD finally could be used in ALL hard drive disasters even hard drive failure.

Why would anyone want to cripple such an unique one-of-a-kind program? Do they now believe that all the research and development that went into this program in its later stages is to now be thrown away? Why? We all love this program MAINLY because of having so many bootable options and the Archives. Again, to repeat myself, without these options it is not much greater than all of the other Instant Recovery programs out there, at least the ones that I am familiar with. o_O :( :'(

I don't think FD-ISR was made with the home market/home user in mind although many of us have proved it can be used in such environments.

I also echo the surprise of others at hearing of HDS' announcement regarding FD-ISR Rescue.

I keep saying I'd like to hear Leapfrog's stance in all of this; to date, Todd hasn't actually answered any questions, especially regarding the Freeze issue. All we have is some announcement that the company is in a hiring phase, hinting at changes and more news to follow.

I think I speak for all of us when I say I hope Todd will do us the courtesy of explaining exactly what is going on.

    Open Letter to Leapfrog:
    Exactly  :'(

    Sorry Chris:
I know you were maybe not a big user of FDISR previously But EVERY member who has used FDISR to now would seem to be utterly gobsmacked by what is appropriately termed "evisceration" of a great tool:
    functionality absolutely destroyed imo

Multiple boots with different set-ups, different OS's, different configs, archives, incredible flexibility, freeze GONE GONE GONE: I'm afraid I cant see any good in this revamp at any level.

A Ferrari turned into a POS.

Is any body a purchaser of PEER-ISR or BOOTBACK ?
Is there any different circumstances from those resellers?
Will they continue to offer the Full version for dl?
    Support and updates??
    New isrcopy.exe if required??
I would even go and buy their apps if they will continue to offer support.

I will happily pay a tithe to Raxco if they continue to offer support and updates. Is there any more meaningful info from them.??
This page does not specifically mention where the support will come from ??

Just when I am about to set-up 3 new desktops for home and work :(

So disappointed and angry; useless I know....just software.

Still :ouch: :ouch: :ouch:

Is there anything that can do what FDISR did ?? NO: why do this ??

    Confoundedly

Self Moderated: I do see where 'old' versions of FDISR can apparently still be retrieved from HDS but for how long and do these dl's have the full multisnapshot etc functionality as well as freeze ??
Note to self back up and save FDISR downloads !!

OPEN Letter to HDS; dont do this please.
You have had terrific success with Rollback and a lot of support for that app here
Why not let the consumer choose??
You cant lose by maintaining FDISR as it was.

I also used an archive to clean my off-line snapshot instead of using a registry cleaner, history cleaner and manual cleanings.
An archive did all this with one single copy/update in less than 1 minut and I had my original volume back.

= Abandonware (completely fecked over ware)

One can only hope Todd will have some new tool to replicate FDISR but if I read correctly HDS has bought Leapfrog out of FDISR and that's all folks.

I wish I could comment more but not sure how much more of the email I can share.. Sorry... One way or another this is a good thing even though some of you can not see it. I do understand that change stinks but you have to have change to progress.

EDIT: Also if HDS is still oferring the freeze version why the concern at this point in time? Are there issues with that version that need addressed?

    Thanks,

    Chris

In perpetuity? Any successor of winVISTA will terminate FirstDefense Workstation in perpetuity. HDS just killed FirstDefense-ISR pure and simple. I won't forget this.

I'm going to use FDISR as long as possible and look for an alternate solution, but it won't be LollbackRx, DriveVaccine or FirstDefense-ISR Rescue.

This is the very type of action users dread most aside from getting hammered by a virus with no useable image to fall back on, and exactly the reason i always hold on to the version that is proven the BEST and fully featured and turn a skeptical eye whenever some update or change is announced.

I for one am clinging tight to the FD-ISR version i been using all along and it's plenty enough feature packed and stable as a rock, but best of all it doesn't originate nor is been distributed by HDS which is seen fit to slowly begin to dismantle it.

To that end, one begs to cry FOUL!!!:thumbd:

    @Chris
I really hope you do know something that will be good out of this.

RollBack: no Raid support, cannot do what I regard as proper imaging ( which from my point of view is an absolutely critical issue), screws with the kernel, can't find anything that suggests Rollback works with tape back-up. ??

CAnt see how any other combination of HDS tools will replace FDISR.

FDISR apart from all the other differences works with all above and doesnt screw with boot, or kernel.

    Open to correction...

Chris I don't mean this in a personal way, but if your signature said FDISR, instead or Rollback RX, I suspect your perspective would be different.

I understand, and wouldn't want you to reveal confidentialities, but for a user such as myself where archives are critical to me, and Rollback doesn't meet my need, it's hard to see anything good about it.

Yes I will continue to use FDISR, and see it meeting my needs for quite some time to come, but I have a hard time seeing this as anything but Rollback killing off the competition. Sorry.

PS. It's clear that you have a good contact at HDS. You might pass along our concerns, and invite them to come hear and address them. That would go a long way to settling things.

Peter: My signature says Rollback yes because I like it. Although I am currently using FDISR and not rollback due to an issue with the new version 8.1 which I am currently working with Andrew on. I don't mind FDISR in theory but for what I do it takes to much time to restore/update snapshots/archives and disk space. But people who do not do the same as me FDISR is great and for me the best option till my rollback issue is resolved (which currently is not an issue since FDISR can't do it either). But if you think it would make a difference I will put FDISR on there although my perspective will be the same. Also I have already given my contact at HDS a link to this thread which they have reviewed and may review again.

Longboard: I do not know any more about the program functions of FDISR than what I posted. But yet something good always comes from something some people perceive as bad.

I look on the bright side. HDS sells both programs and will give updates as mentioned in my previous post and offers top notch support from my experience. I have nothing to lose or gain either way. Just trying to pass on the info to give some insight.

    Thanks,

    Chris

We been over this (RBx issues) similiar ground before except with different circumstances in that now you yourself are experiencing a problem which makes the program not even safe to run on your own machine as evident by your replies.

I know it's been said they are working on it, but then hasn't this program experienced ongoing issues in one manner or another for how many versions?

There was a lot of optimistic expectations by many just before 8.1 rolled out for release, with some really useful new features and all, but it appears yet once again, something is hit a snag.

Is it possible that the very nature of this particular technology requires more than what HDS has at it's ready disposal in engineering and lab facilities or could it be that once again $M code issues are at fault, or even compatibility issues concerning vista, if it even supports vista.
