    Erik

Calm down.:D In the Raxco version of 205 the freeze function is alive and well. You may still freeze yourself to your hearts content.

Do you really think that is a comfort for me ?
The freeze function has been removed and that means I can't upgrade anymore. In other words : the software is dead.

Erik, please wait for my email from HDS to return before you get all freaked out. As I have said in the past HDS is usually way more than willing to impliment user requests and suggestions. maybe they had not relized what a good thing freeze was. I will post here as soon as I get the info.

    Thanks,

    Chris

YOu didn't read mine either. Freeze is in 205 in the Raxco version. You can update assuming you bought from Raxco.

Don't worry, I won't ditch FDISR right away. I'm testing Deepfreeze in combination with FDISR, then Returnil.

So what ? Chris has a FDISR without Freeze, that says enough.
There is no reason at all to do this, if the user doesn't like freeze, he only has to do one thing : not use it.

It's all well and good to wait to hear what HDS has to say about this. I'm more interested to learn what Leapfrog have to say as well considering the version on their site doesn't match ANY of the resellers.

PS. Just checked their site, and the Product Updates link now gives a 404 Error page. The Product Support link, however, takes you to the HDS page for FD-ISR.

So in essence just so that i'm perfectly clear on this matter of FREEZE STORAGE feature of FD-ISR, for those of us who still retain that useful feature; The FreezeStorage.arx is in reality an archive that FD draws on to Copy/Update the FreezeStorage snapshot.

    Isn't that correct?

I got a little lost when first taking on the 3 selections of Freeze, Unfreeze, Freeze Previous; whereas if i follow Erik's guidance right, Freeze is our only snapshot (Active) selected for this sure procedure and Freeze Previous returns removed data and/or removes added data during the reboot stage where FD-ISR calls on the .arx aka FreeezeStorage archive to perform a Copy/Update to the UnFreezed snapshot which is been exposed to changes, whatever those might be. And as such restores again to the first FREEZE when activated.

If i missed something about all this i'm all eyes. Thanks

Yes that would be my understanding of it.

I think your description is accurate, though the wording confuses me a little.

Basically start with a snapshot, anyone that you might have and Freeze it....it is now called Frozen......fd-isr creates an archive of this....the frozen archive. This frozen archive coupled with the continual copy/updateing to the Frozen snapshot from the frozen archive on reboot is the frozen process.

Un freeze it, but keep the frozen archive intact and fd-isr simply disables the copy/update on reboot......this allows you to carry changes across a reboot.

Now, if you want to keep said changes, you freeze again, this will copy/update to the frozen archive, adding the changes to it, and resetting the command copy/update at boot. Once agin you are frozen.

If you don't like the changes you carried across boot, you can "Frezze previous", this causes the copy/update from the frozen archive removing the changes, kind of a delayd implimentation of the normal boot copy/update, and it resets the command to copy/update at boot agin so your snapshot is once again considered frozen.......if that makes sense

Not many FDISR-users are fully familiar with Freeze/Unfreeze/Freeze Previous and what you can do with the freeze storage.

Here is another possibility of a frozen snapshot :
    1. Click on Tools / Options / Freeze-tab
    2. Change the freeze storage folder into your archive folder and choose any existing .arx-file.
    3. Click OK
    4. Reboot and you will boot directly in the choosen .arx-file (archive).

Although the manual says, you cannot boot in an archive, well this is the way to boot in any archive directly.

    :cautious: Obviously.
    @Pete
    Apparently not o_O
From all reports both those resellers have done a good job ?? :(

I see ominous trends afoot.. I am now really worried about FDISR
"My" FDISR is just one of those almost perfect things: fits, works, looks and feels good, reliable : absolutely the right thing at the right time. If any of the hundreds of threads here are indicative: I am not the only one who feels this way. I see nothing of value adding or improvements in the evolving status quo.

Still no response or clarification from Leapfrog re current update and "modified version" fiasco that is underway as we speak.

Will be waiting with interest for response to Chris12923's e-mail queries

FWIW I have come to believe that FDISR is a GREAT tool ( just used it this morning to test a new app in spare snap and then update system and arx files: smooth as..) and current circumstances are causing me real concern.

What The Hell Is Going On
    :(
    Regards.

I do recalll by the way you mentioning this a few times before but at the time still being new to FirstDefense, i thought it best to hold off untill i got up the courage again to tinker like that :D

However i can definitely see why you Erik, are always persistently abuzz over this FREEZE STORAGE reboot-to-restore "Clean" all the time because it really does fairly well sew up the loose ends in keeping a CLEAN system free from unwanted/wanted changes either way, and you start out again at Ground Level Zero with a perfect slate again.

So i applaud your tenacity in that bold approach to fashion all the other BEST POSSIBLE precautions against potential online entries. It's like taking all considerations possible to prevent even a the slightest strand of hair or piece of lint from tarnishing the linen. ;)

Ok some wild speculation here, and of course it is just speculation........
It would be my belief that FD-ISR will soon fade from the PC market, and the removal of the freeze function would be in keeping with this, I doubt servers have much use for it. As soon as Rx is configured to support RAID, bye bye FD for the home market.

I honestly think it was a mistake on Leapfrogs part. I really don't see Horizon as interested in actively marketing FDISR as much as removing it from the market. I don't use freeze, but the logic they used in removing it is poor at best.

Much as I might, I still can't quite see Rollback as the replacement for FDISR.

Not sure where this came from but..small rant on:
IMHO that is twaddle. Yeah; why not get a snapshot system tool that borks your system, requires a really confounding series of high jumps to image so you can lose all your other snapshots o_O ( Disc imaging, system imaging, mountable images, I believe, is still the cornerstone of recovery) and at least on this forum has left users in a complete hole.
From a company that despite their supposedly phenomenal success has seemingly lurched from problem to failed release to problem to weird rebranding to failure to deliver on promises ad nauseam.

    http://supportcenteronline.com/ics/support/KBAnswer.asp?questionID=21
    Can Rollback Rx and FirstDefense-ISR be used together? ;
FD-ISR and RB Rx have diametrically opposed world-views as shown in the diagram below

: well DUH !! Double DUH even !!
Who is that last line a dig at ??

    Support Question:
Right, thanks for that, I'll be sure and trust my disc to good ole simple RollBack

This makes for nice cool reading:

Never mind the defragging issue ?!? CheckDsk still boiling along
How about this for unintended consequences?pitfall of unguarded uninstall
    http://supportcenteronline.com/ics/forum/Client/Common/ContentView.aspx?contentID=52909

This is not meant to be HDS bashing but an explanation as to why I am increasingly nervous re future of : "FDISR/PEERISR/BOOTBACK" as we may have come to know it, involved with HDS. To put it mildly I was thunderstruck when The "strategic alliance" was announced and now these odd announcements and modifications to resellers and structure of the app.

WRT the idea that "Freeze" in FDISR could be replaced by DriveVaccine: this been tested with both apps installed?? Prefer not to have HDS on my box thx anyway. Aren't there better "Restore at Boot" apps around ??

I don't mean to sound petulant but high speed "spinning" underway somewhere.
No idea where we will be left as yet.

It's "Todd's" company, he will do what he thinks is best, but from current perspectives ?? WTF ??

Wasn't there once a link on Leapfrog home page to Wilders? Still there?
Any link at HDS to this Forum?
This Forum have any relevance any more?
End users in any loop here?

Ok, enough, breathe in out in out..rant off.

Sorry 'bout the delay but my contact at HDS is quite a ways up from support so it took a little more time than usual.

Ok please read here for more info on FDISR http://support.horizondatasys.com/ics/support/default.asp?deptID=4443&task=knowledge&questionID=299 .

Any HDS FDISR customer can request a previous version of FDISR with the freeze function at no cost by submitting a support request.
If you are not a customer of Horizon DataSys, but are a client of Raxco - you can receive their previously purchased builds, but will be required
to purchase the annual support package (USD$ 15). The Raxco customer
support can be purchased at the following url: http://www.horizondatasys.com/187010.ihtml

So it looks like a very exciting future for FDISR instead of dying out like some of the posts here have suggested. I for one am looking forward to it.

Again sorry for the delay and I hope this helps.

    Thanks,

    Chris

    Hmn thanx for that update.
I wonder do I interpret this correctly.
Does this mean that archives are a thing of the past with this product, or is an "off-line archive" something different from a normal "archive"
and does this mean that from now on there will only be one other bootable snapshot?

Like Tradetime, I also understand that we won't be able to archive anymore and that we won't be able to make more than one snapshot + our primary snapshot? I hope that I read and understand it wrong because that is note very exciting news or future and we can now say that the FD-ISR we know is dead and won't go better... What a shame :(

    That is my understanding too.
    1. No archives anymore, the freeze functions was also based on an archive (Freeze Storage.ARX).

    2. FDISR Rescue still provides one bootable snapshot, to clean the actual harddisk, which is still better than Returnil and DeepFreeze, because you probably can change that one snapshot.

This is a very streamlined version of FDISR of course and many possibilities are gone now.
The old FirstDefense-ISR is terminated. Only the user can keep it.

Maybe it was not a good idea to give FDISR to HDS, because FDISR was competing with RollbackRx and this was confusing for customers, because they didn't know what to choose anymore.
HDS is not going to terminate their own product RBRx, so FDISR had to pay.
This would have never happen at Raxco.

Let's hope that Leapfrog comes up with NEW ideas, better than FDISR.

Reading the press release from HDS....

    What , What & WHAT!!!!

Looks like only one alternate image = bye bye off disc/ alternate snapshots
FD-ISR Workstation taken off the market altogether.

This looks like FD-ISR is to be eviscerated (no offline snapdhots, no freeze, only 2 snapshots) and a FD-ISR lite is to take its place, mainly for HDS's reason that potential users couldn't choose between Rollback Rx & FD-ISR for ISR.

Perhaps Leapfrog would like to tell those who have supported and promoted FD-ISR on the official Leapfrog forum why this course has been chosen & whether there is any prospect of FD-ISR being 'developed' after build 205 (i.e. do they plan to add/ restore any functionality) or are we now dealing with abandonware.
