I'm curious, how many of you use a real-time AV program in your security setup?

    NOD32 at work.

Avira at home. Trialing the suite right now.

Checking this thread will get you a good array of answers too.

Nope, ever since my first computer the blacklisting concept never made any sense.

For those of you who don't use one, can you explain why?

I'm thinking about doing the same, but I don't think I'm brave enough. :doubt:

I'm just wondering if virtualization, HIPS, firewalls, provide enough protection?

Is blacklisting turning into an old school method these days?

If used properly, they provide a NIGH-IMPENETRABLE defense, with the only chink in the armor left to human error.

Ever hear the advice that no AV protects you completely, and good surfing habits play an important part too? Well, that doesn't apply with HIPS/virtualization.

I been running my box without any real-time AV's since the introduction of the first popular HIPS in SystemSafetyMonitor and never looked back. Mind you i also cover the system partition with Power Shadow and now Returnil + SandboxIE.

Yes, you can be brave enough but first i would install a HIPS and get acquainted with how it works first, they are complicated to some degree in that takes time & study to Tweak it although most have a Learning Mode.

I would not suggest blindly removing your AV to install virtuals/sandboxes/HIPS untill you've had a chance to learn them and understand them better, after that and after running some local test malware or even leaktests, you can get an idea of just how they are quite capable of totally replacing an AV "resident", and your system will thank you for that, although i found KIS6 the lightest full AV i have ever used, but now use Nod32 for On-Demand on my samples and the occasional sweep thruout my system for good measure. LoL

NOD32, WinPatrol Plus, Acronis and Windows XP firewall is all I use and all you likely will need. Never had malware of any kind with multiple computers on the net 16 hours a day. However, nothing is 100% certain to prevent all malware.

You betcha! Sometimes I step where I shouldn't be steppin'. :D Avira AntiVir PE Premium is a very good step sweeper. Those that do not use any on access protection must be treading very lightly.

I've gone long periods without a real time AV. I used BD free version which is on demand only for about two years recently. Currently, I use Avira Personal Premium and I did not use the real time scanner for six months. I use it at the momemt but it is causing DEP problems so I will probably go back to just using it as on demand. There is a problem though with using Avira as on demand only. It has poor unpackers like so many AV. There would no need to ever use real time protection if the AV vendors would beef up the unpackers. That is why I started using it real time because the on demand scanner could not detect a malware program recently but the real time scanner could. I just detest that the AV companies insist on all the drivel like the http scanners and other junk but won't do what the most important thing: beef up the on demand scanner.

I would not go on the web without one. Currently I use a suite. As long as the AV runs well, I cannot imagine why one would not take that precaution, but admit I do not have the knowledge that most of you do.

I'd rather tie my shoe than trip over the laces.

    Regards,
    Jerry

Sorry; in my case, that'd be asking for at least 6 infections per day. As far as your sweeping generalizations go, that setup isn't up to the task in my environment at all.

If you don't want to waste your resource on real time protection but still want the antivirus protection, you can choose Safe'n'sec+antivirus(Drweb), it only scan when some action happens.

    yep i agree,

at only £16 a year, its a good balance of HIPS and antivirus.

basically the detection will be as close to 100% as you probably could be, but with no pop ups or alerts or anything.

i think its a very good deal.

Hi, folks: Any AV equipped with realtime scanner (on access), which quietly scans each single file you designate to be done in the background, is a big plus asset to your daily anti-malware task. I can not image how could PC users survive a day without it. Mind you , I have other signature-less anti-ware gears as well, such as DeepFreeze, ThreatFire and PRSC etc. Take care.

General perception seems to be it that running an AV is prevention, and not doing so is exposing oneself to inherent risks.

However, the fact is that if HIPS and virtualization software are used properly, the difference in the level of prevention they provide compared to that of AV software, is like the difference between running an AV and no AV - perhaps even more.
