Recently, a link has been appearing in my AIM profile. I delete it and it reappears everytime I log on. The link brings one to a page where one is forced to download a virus, unless they exit the entire browser application. The log of the computer is:

    Hi Celiciuser,

That is the shortest log I have ever seen. I can see two spyware-applications running, so my guess would be you put too much on the ignore list or you are only giving us part of the information.
I would like to make you aware of the fact that this could result in a partial solution.

    Have HijackThis Fix:
    O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [Antivirus] C:\WINDOWS\av.exe

Reboot, preferably into safe mode and delete C:\WINDOWS\av.exe

    Regards,

    Pieter

    I am concerned about this:

    C:\WINDOWS\mlrtqwzy.exe

    What is this?

First - it is in C:/Windows - and I had there some scumware installed before...

Second - the name - it is only a bunch of letters, I think that "good" programs will have a "normal" name,a name where will be clear what is the file about... not this bunch of letters...

I think that such a weird name will have preferreably a "bad" file, where the author thinks: "I will name it mlrtqwzy.exe, because the user of the computer will not have a clue what it is and will not dare to delete it, cos he will be worried if it is not some necessary system file, and so the spyware or trojan will be left in peace here"... installing it in Windows file only supports my thoughts about that :)

If it will be in my computer, I will check the date of creating and if it will be about the day when I started to have computer problems - probably found the source of probs...

Maybe I am wrong, but I have a feeling, that C:\WINDOWS\mlrtqwzy.exe
is some bastard good for nothing and worth deleting...

What do you think, Pieter and other mods? ;)

Edit: And Pieter is right about "the shortest log he has seen" - yes, definitely, the second part of the log - where the lines begin with numbered letter - should be longer... either clean the ignore list of HJT or past the whole log here... it is indeed possible, that it is actually the whole log, but it is weird... as Pieter said, if the log is not complete, it may lead in only partial solution...

    My opinions about the log

In my opinion you should fix this:

    C:\WINDOWS\svchost.exe
    C:\Program Files\Microsoft Office\Office\OSA.EXE

Weird things, I dont know what are they about, but I smell something fishy here...

    R0 - HKLM\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main,Local Page = c:\windows\SYSTEM\blank.htm - C:/Windows? Easy target for installing scumware...

    O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [Microsoft Tray] C:\Program Files\Grokster\My Grokster\Virtuagirl_brianabanks_full.exe - Virtuagirl Briana Banks? I think I hear the SPYWARE song here ;)

    O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [srng] \Program Files\Srng\Srng.exe - what is thiso_O

    O10 - Unknown file in Winsock LSP: c:\windows\system32\inetadpt.dll - what is thiso_O

Dont fix anything yet, wait for some moderator, the mods are more knowledgeable about this stuff, I am only a newbie who likes to study the logs and search for scumware in it, I can point something good or not point some real threat :) Wait for example for Pieter_Arntz or some other moderator :)

    Hi Celiciuser,

Check the following items in HijackThis.
Close all windows except HijackThis and click Fix checked:

    R0 - HKLM\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Search,CustomizeSearch =
    R0 - HKLM\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Search,SearchAssistant = http://pop.popuptoast.com/9885/search/search.html

Hijack This usually has trouble fixing this one. Re-run Hijack This after following up on all of Pieter's recommendations.
If that line is still there, download LSPfix here: http://www.cexx.org/lspfix.htm

Launch the application, and click the "I know what I'm doing" checkbox.

Check all instances of inetadpt.dll (and nothing else) , and move them to the "Remove" pane.
    Then click Finish.

Reboot, and delete the c:\windows\system32\inetadpt.dll file itself.

I was able to get rid of the problem on my computer, however a friend now is dealing with the same thing, but the av.exe file does not seem to be on their computer.
