Ti11 & Rollback?

I've seen a few comments here about some people using Rollback with True Image. Can someone explain why it's better to use both? And what would be a reasonable schedule for backing up / snapshooting / imaging? (I recognize that this last question is quite subjective, but need input as I have no experience in this area...and just had a hard drive fail (had it backed up!).

First of all Rollback will not save you when your hard drive fails. On the other hand, Acronis True Image will as long as you saved the image to another drive that is not the one that failed.

The one problem you will see is that Acronis True Image will not copy all your Rollback snapshots but only the Baseline. Best way I used that combo in the past is to do a Full Backup Archive with True Image before you install Rollback for safety. After you install Rollback, just keep using that for Immediate Restoration "a system restore alternative" when your windows fails to start. You can use whatever schedule you want with Rollback, but for you to do an update to the Full Image Archive with Acronis, I would update the Baseline of Rollback to a current "good" snapshot of Rollback then do an Incremental Image with Acronis. That was the best way I saw those two working.

Thanks! I figured I'd just be using Rollback in place of system restore but wasn't quite sure if I was missing something.

It sounds like you no longer use that combo. Have you found a better option?

Best option was FD-ISR + Acronis True Image but I have issues with FD-ISR that haven't been resolved. I now use Acronis True Image + Acronis Disk Director Suite with 3 partitions (Primary, Backup of Primary, and Games) and OS Selector to switch between partitions. This is pretty much an old fashion way.

My computer is on most of the time day and night. I use the Acrnois Scheduler in conjunction with the Acronis Backup Location linked to another drive. I have it setup to take daily Incremental backups and a new Full backup every 7 days. I do a manual Full backup sometimes. I have Acronis Secure Zone enable in conjunction with OS Selector so I don't have to insert the Boot CD every time I need it. Though I don't use the Secure Zone to save images, its set to the minimum disk space of 36 MB or so which is just for the files needed for the Boot Enviornment.

Never used Rollback, and do not have much use for System Restore. It seems that the last couple of system failures I had , on Windows XP, the System Restore failed as well.

I use full system backup only onto external drive. Always make an Acronis boot disk, so that when the failure is complete and your system will not boot, the Acronis Boot disk will take you straight to the Backup screen.

Even though my computer is for home use I find enough changes to justify full backup every 7 to 9 days. I keep two or three newest backups, delete the rest.

I gave up scheduled backups becaue of the erratic hours I spend on the
computer. No matter what hour I schedule the backup my computer isn't on that day.

 

I agree that Windows System Restore is pretty much useless and a waste of space. I know you are asking about True Image 11 and Rollback, but Chamlin, I recommend if you haven't done so, to pick a full Imaging Program first before going towards FD-ISR or Rollback. If you already have True Image 11, Great! Make sure the Boot CD reads your hard drives since it has some issues with that.

dja2k, I bought and installed Acronis True Image 11 and have done my first two full images to an external hard drive. (I also use Mozy for an off-site data backup).

I'll create the bootup disk Monday morning and I'll finish reading the Horizon white paper comparison of Rollback and First Defense. I'm currently using 80GB and have 384GB free on my hard drive, and a 750GB external backup drive.

I'll also finish reading the many threads here regarding using Ti11 with both Rollback and FD-ISR, then come back with more specific and hopefully intelligent questions!

Good luck on the True Image 11 reading your drives with the boot disk when you try it out. Anyways, personally I wouldn't use your combo of True Image and Rollback, I would go with True Image and FD-ISR. Some other users here will agree FD-ISR over Rollback, but feel free to try them out both as I am only expressing my personal opinions.
