Blacklists are also used to block bogus IPs, hijacked IPs, IPs of tracking companies (P2P) and more :)
Firefox with add-ons does this and more :)

Hm, first drawback of the free version discovered. Normally, we give away a copy of OA to anyone that helps us solve a bug :)

You're welcome over at our forums, or if you prefer you can PM me and we'll do it by email.

We stopped supporting win98 when it had about 10% of visitors to our site. If things go nicely with the free version of Online Armor, we will certainly add Vista support.

Well, there are many serious computer users like myself who will gladly pay a fair price for a software that at least does what it should without hassle and hopefully exceeds our expectations. Since my computer helps me make a lot of money, I refuse to skimp on security software and use the free versions. A few extra dollars for added security and peace of mind is worth it.

That being said when I read the original post it caused me to go to their website and investigate. The humbleness and devotion of the developer combined with a user base that seems more than satisfied convinced me to at least do the trial of the full version to see how it works on my main system.

I'm happy to report that the software installed like a breeze and, after a few minutes of tweaking settings and then opening programs to orient the HIPs, the last couple of days have been troublefree. No crashes, two services use about 16Mb of ram total and there is no noticeable impact on CPU and overall computer performance. It plays nicely with Antivir Premium, and I think the combo of a good router with firewall, Antivir and Online Armor is one light and tight security suite.

Wow, it did set it up automagically.

I am very impressed with this software so far.

    Thanks!

    Mike,

The free version really is a lot of goodies for free. When you set all your treath gate aps (limewire, outlook, webbrowser, messenger, etc) to run safer (with reduced rights), you reallly have a low chance of getting any malware with the easy to use and powerfull FW + HIPS combo.

I would not offer this for free, it is way ahead of Comodo in terms of user friendliness, it is a really user friendly anti executable.

You shoudl offer a paid light version with one extra option (besided warn me when a unknown program starts up, the option to run with limited rights).

    Regards Kees

Thank you for your help offer.I just noticed an earlier post regarding admuncher which i also have installed.Based on that, i uninstalled admuncher as well as sygate pro this time, and OA now seems to be functioning correctly,so im giving it a going over.Just wondering how the virus scan works in the free version. Is there a sig list built in somewhere?.One of the uses i put admuncher to ,was the ability to block retrieval of urls by name or a word in the url.Is there anything in the paid version of OA that can accomplish this?

Well if nothing else...this MikeNash (not as well known to me as many others here) is a very friendly Creature, who cares about improving his product and getting answers for the users when issues and concerns arise. That is worth lots when deciding what you should put on your system. :thumb:

Hi, folks: These are the core benefits of being a BOTIQUE application/operation. Just look at those so-called industry-leaders, they run operations like Big-Box or Department Store style. They may have everything in store, but they do not have anything you desire for. OA free to me is an excellent product with rightful attitude (making many more friends than foes). I vote it as the freeware of the year. :thumb: :thumb: Please do not entertain the idea of turning it into a lite-paid ware.

R/click OA icon in the taskbar > Configuration > open program tab. Untick 'hide trusted' and scroll down the list for program you want to 'run safer'. R/click program in name column > click advanced options and check 'run safer' under security. It's that simple! Also I run Prevx 2.0 as well, no problems.

    Hi,

For the rocord I get repeated ieexplore application errors since OA installation. Everything was running smooth before its installation. It also slows down my antivirus responce to 'threats' tested with eicar.

I had to uninstall OA free for that and will wait for the tested version.

Just feedback for you to improve the products performance.

    Waiting for a response.

When you do, I will take a look. Vista's premature introduction (even though it was two years late) and low adoption rate have presented difficult choices for software developers. OA for Vista will be out when its ready, and I am sure it will be a cutting edge product.

Be careful! You'll have lots of angry free-oa-less users chasing you if you're not careful :D

Seriously, I know that the free OA package is good and there was a lot of internal debate about exactly which features to include/exclude in the free version... we figured what's the point of releasing it if it doesn't pass the test of usefulness... we're not trying to release it as Demo-ware, we'd like people to use it.

Maybe the free version of OA is the smartest thing we've ever done. Maybe it's the stupidest :)

I guess we'll see over the next few months... for sure, we hope that the free version of OA will broaden the exposure of the program to people who haven't tried it (or even considered it) before... and maybe, some of those will buy the full version.

    Hi -

Can you tell me which AV you were using, please? Inside the "My Programs" GUI you could set it to "Trusted" instead of "Allowed" which means OA will not monitor it so closely (this improve performance).

I have seen the IE error sometime on shutdown on my own computer at home - but not during normal use of IE... In any case, you are welcome over at our forums to get help (and help us!) with this because we don't maintain an official presence at Wilders and we're not supposed to do 1-2-1 support here as a result.

When we get this released, I'm going to hold you to that :)

Don't worry - OA Free is going to be around for a while...

The full version of OA includes the webshield which filters nasties out of websites on several levels. For example, a site you might want to visit (which could be dangerous) can be marked as untrusted - which means active content will not load, but you still see the "pictures".

Sites you don't want to see at all can be blacklisted. You can't do it by URL part at the moment - but we've plans to upgrade this feature. Think proxomitron + admuncher but easy to use.

OA Free working great. It's simply a very good product and i hear the Full version calling my name. LOL. However when will the website be updated to reflect the differences between the new free version and the Full version?

Whoops, should have checked first huh? LOL. Thank you. How about the current free version though, will it be updated to the final release soon? I noticed the update is grayed out in the current release?

Online Armor has a small database. With OA free you cant get updates for the list though.

    *********

Hey Mike in the OA comparison chart, what is "Transparent Blocking"?

The Free version of OA does not support updates of any kind, so when the "final" free version is uploaded it will be a reinstall I'm afraid.

Still finalising some cosmetics. I'd say the final free version will be released within the next 2-3 days - certainly by the end of the week.
