I am coming to terms with Version 3 and would like some advice please.

I use Thunderbird 2.0.0.6 as my email client.

My question is about checking of incoming attachments. In version 2.7 a progress window opened in the bottom right of the screen during download of attachments. I do not see this window in Version 3 and wonder if I have set it up correctly.
I am running the pretty much the default setup with Thunderbird ticked under Antivirus and AntiSpyware/Email Protection/Pop3/Email Clients.
Enable email checking is ticked under Pop3.

I can see the update window during updates.

    thanks for any assistance.

Have not used v3.0, but would suggest two things to try:

    • If using a secure POP connection, make sure you've specified as such as far as ports to scan (995, I believe it is). GMail is a good example of this.
    • Snag a copy of Eicar, attach it to a message, and send it to yourself. If v3 is correctly scanning your inbound messages, you'll probably know it. (May need to temporarily exclude it from scanning while dealing with it when sending.)

    Thanks Veri,

Snagging Eicar - easier said than done!! Nod 32 trapped me at every turn, detected at download, detected a cut and paste of the characters (As detailed in Wikipedia) saved with differing file names. Even with Nod 32 removed from Startup I could not save a file which included the characters from the Eicar file.
    Got me stumped
    thanks

If they've already included an exclusion option in v3, I'd choose to ignore the file when you save initially (enable whatever options may exist in v3 that would allow you that choice as opposed to auto-quarantine / auto-delete), then add it to exclusions, then attach/send to yourself, close Thunderbird so it doesn't retrieve the message just yet, remove Eicar from exclusions, and then fire up TB and download that message - see what happens.

Since I haven't touched v3 yet, I don't know if this is an option, but it's what comes to mind.

Append Tag messages to 'all email' and send a mail to yourself, then you'll see a tag in the incoming message in Thunderbird. That way you know it's configured properly.

    Thank you Big Apple,
Append tag messages to received and read email: - To all email adds a tag on received mail.
Messages sent to myself with Append tag messages to sent email: - To all email does not add a tag.
    Any thoughts
    thanks

Other than some sort of issue with the release candidate, all I'm coming up with is:

Are you using a gmail account or anything else with all-around secure connections (SPOP3 @ 995, S-SMTP @ 465 or 587)? Are you using a nonstandard port for SMTP? Does Nod32 v3 know about it (have you specified a nonstandard port for outgoing mail)?

Oh, standard... honestly, I have no idea. If you've set it to append tags to all outgoing messages, and there's not some random setting in TB 2.0 that would affect this (been awhile since I was a hardcore TB user, as I switched when Outlook '07 was just going into b2), I really don't know.

Interested in responses from others, though.

    :doubt:
