I’ve purchased and installed TI 9.1 Server and Workstation on several machines along with the Universal Restore option.

I use external usb drives for backups and configured each for a Secure Zone using the entire disk. My reason for using SZ is that scheduled backups are not dependant on the drive letter assigned to the usb drive and that TI will delete older backups to make room for new ones as needed (I.E. it’s self maintaining without user intervention).

Testing the restore function to the same machine works just fine. But new tests I’ve performed restoring to dissimilar hardware are failing with BSOD’s etc.

Then I ran across this little caveat gem in the user guides for both the server and workstation 9.1 products:

    2. The Acronis Universal Restore option does not work if a computer is booted with Acronis
Startup Recovery Manager (using F11) or the backup image is located in Acronis Secure
Zone. This is because Acronis Startup Recovery Manager and Acronis Secure Zone are
primarily meant for instant data recovery on the same computer.

So my question is, what the heck does the location of an image have to do with the ability to perform a Universal Restore. My confidence in Acronis is starting to erode.

Would anyone care to comment? I would appreciate it.

    WellHell .... I'll throw my 2 cents in .. :D

What happens if you boot with the rescue cd to do the Restore?
In your attempt, did you get the option to add drivers, especially the video driver for the system?
When you say dissimilar hardware, is this an entirely different computer?

    Hello Edvinmass,

Thank you for choosing Acronis Disk Backup Software

We'd like to inform you that Acronis Secure Zone was designed to store images only of the computer that hosts the drive Acronis Secure Zone is set up on. It was not foreseen that one can use Acronis Secure zone as in your case, so Acronis Universal Restore feature wasn't designed to be capable to modify data in images from Acronis Secure Zone.

If you have any questions concerning our software, please feel free to submit a request for technical support or post any of them on this forum. We will do our best to help you as soon as possible.

    Thank you.

Well folks, there you have it, the official word from Acronis Support.

If you purchased the Universal Restore option, expecting to use it with an image stored inside a Secure Zone, you’ll be SOL if you try to restore to a different machine than the one that the image was created from.

And to answer DwnNdrty’s questions, yes I’m trying to restore the image to a different machine that the one the image was created on. And even though I’m invoking the the True Image with Universal Restore function from the Recovery CD, once I select an image from the Secure Zone, it never prompts me to add additional 3rd Party Drivers.

Finally, although the restore completes successfully, on the reboot it blue screens.
