This hype (deserved :) ) over Karen's Replicator is commendable but you're driving my nuts.

I need to know one thing. I installed it and it seems to backup on a schedule only. I'm sorry, but i need an immediate on-the-fly backup of my data files.

If this exists in Karen's program please point out where this can be located. I didn't see it at all.

    Re: free imaging software?

    Easter,
Assuming your have already created a job.
    1. Open Karen's Replicator
    2. Select the job
    3. Click on the button Edit Settings
    4. Click on the button Edit Job, then you get the "Job Settings"-screen

At the bottom, on the left side there is a box "Enabled".
If you unmark that box, the job is NOT scheduled, which means you have to start it manually.

    Save the whole things.

PS : You will see that screen also when you create a new job.

    Easter,
You can create a job which will run whenever you click a shortcut--or have it run every hour and have it back up all changes made during the preceding time since it ran last. It offers a lot of variations.

Karen is always been a very thoughful and creative developer. I never once hesitated Donating to her because of the POWER TOY program back on Windows 98 days. To me that was as close to AI as i could find for a freeware offering and it was highly customizable.

Now with this Replicator i wouldn't have dreamed it would turn out as useful and exciting for users (to her credit) as it's now proven for many.

Thanks again fellows for the details.

I need a reliable backup-tool to backup MyDocuments etc.

I have MyDocuments in D: (Windows and applications in C: ). I want to backup to an ext. disk E: Not scheduled, only when I decide.

    Does Karen's Replicator cover this:

    1. Just file by file backup, not compressed, so that source folder look the same as the backup folder.

    2. When I delete a file or a folder in the source folder D:, the same file or folder will be deleted in the backup/destination folder E: if I want this.

    3. Let's say I have used KR for six months. During this time I have deleted lots of files and folders in the source D: But these files and folders are still in my backup folder on my ext. disk E: The next time I run a job with KR I want an option to delete all these files and folders from my backup. The result will be that source and backup look excactly the same.

I guess KR cover all this, but nice if someone can confirm.

What if I want compression, encryption, password ?

Is this the only way to restore?:

Also, what is the difference between KR and an sync appl?

About your last question,Yes you can configure KR to make it a sync app.In the edit screen, tick "replicate file and folder deletion" and set time schedule on one minute,So if you edit the source data, then after one minute the destination data are updated,if you delete something in the source folder,it will also deleted in the destination folder, anyhow synchronisation in computing means to make different objects equal as vast as possible to forstall dataloss.
Albert can give you also a most comprehensive explanation on all this !!

FYI, Be carefull to do this sync, because if everything is always equal then if you mess with the sourse then there is no possibility to restore the sourse files from the destination[backup] Karen warns us about to think twice before you do that !! This is the danger with all these so called sync. app.Better do it manualy at the moment you think best,so better every two hours then every minute.

The worst scenario is a harddisk crash and you have to buy a new harddisk.
The second worst scenario is that you have to zero your harddisk first, if a normal format fails.
My post is only about these scenarios.
You don't have to restore this way in a normal situation.

Just start using KR and you will learn which settings you need.
If you don't trust KR, keep on using your actual image backup.
I also used both in the beginning.

You're right, you can get in trouble with sync. Using the AJC Sync program when I was syncing, I did get myself in trouble. So I switched it's mode to work like FDISR. It always make the target look like the source. No more problems.

Thanks to all of you :)

Agree, thanks. But sometimes I may find this useful.

I also have a second int. hdd. So my most important data (not all) will be backed up to this too. And also to DVD with some other backup-tool. 4 different locations, that should be safe enough :D (Specially if at least one of these are located somewhere outside my home)

I think I finally found an easy reliable backup tool, but have to try it first. But that will have to wait. First of all I'm going to rearrange my partitions and that will take some time because I have not found out how I want them yet.

    Hi,

I could not find the log.txt in:
    C:\Program Files\Karen's Power Tools\Replicator

    But I find Replicator-log.txt in:
    C:\Documents and Settings\All Users\Application Data\Karen's Power Tools\Replicator

So, the Replicator-log.txt is the file for Job List o_O I opened it and it contains the log only.

    Thanks.

Is there a way to get Karen's Replicator to backup to multiple locations without having to run a separate job for each one?

Maybe not, but as far I understand KR you can run several jobs after one another, you only have to mark them and start them with one click.

Yes, Karen builds nice free tools, and I gladly use some of them.

But, after trying Replicator, I will return to using SyncBack (freeware version of SyncBackSE http://www.2brightsparks.com/freeware/freeware-hub.html).

Many more fine tuning options when using the "expert mode" and way faster at work in my tests to synchronize big folders/drives and great number of files, on my old pc. This one has worked flawlessly here for the last 8 months!

And I find the GUI more intuitive than KR, but it can be caused by the fact that I am really more used to SyncBack.

    YMMV...

One question: Is the Replicator able to copy files in use? I know, copying in-use files does not guarantee the integrity of files, but it's a nice feature.

    Oke. I found it...

    It's in:

    C:\Documents and Settings\%User%\Local Settings\Application Data\Karen's Power Tools\Replicator\Jobs.txt

    Thanks.

That's what I didn't like about Karen's Replicator. She stores her program settings and logs all over the places (messy). Prefer all settings and logs, etc to be stored in the program files folder......food for her thought.*puppy*
