Then, SO has better document filters (e.g. WordPerfect).
    Better localized documentation.
    Commercial quality spellchecker, thesaurus.
    Lots of sample documents, templates.

Next, the blah, blah SO feature advantages:
    More Asian fonts.
    Additional proprietary fonts.
Slightly more polished "look / feel".
    Clipart images.

i think one of the big differences is staroffice must have support too. overall they are pretty much the same.

the version i had (i uninstalled it) had some extra stuff novell put in, i know it looked better then the normal version.

    Hi.

Yes , I do . I have been using it since version 1.5

No , I do prefer MS Office to OO . Microsoft Office is much better , easier to use and with more functions I do need.

    As I said I am a long OO user . I have seen v 1.5 and now 2.0.0.1
Open Office definitely imporved a lot . 1.5 was very buggy and lacked functions which I needed really . 2.0.0.1 is really improved , no noticable bugs , added functions and is really preferable than old versions . But Microsoft Office is still the king of all offices . I just got some more money and purchased my copy of the new Office 2007.

I also should note that as well as Open Office , I also use Microsoft free Office 2003 viewers (Word , Excel , PowerPoint). These free viewers allows you just open and print a file.

OpenOffice is great. I use it several hours every day.

The only problem I see with it, from my perspective, is that it has no grammar check. I currently solve that problem by keeping MS Word on my computer and running my day's pages through Word to check for possible problems. That doesn't mean Word's grammar check is perfect, but at least you can find potential problems.

I don't like Word simply because when you reach about the 250-300 page mark it has always had, and still has, a nasty habit of sometimes screwing up formatting, and you never know it until you begin printing since it doesn't show in the document.

I also switched completely to OO, although Excel is still superior to OO Calc in some aspects. But I'm sure that OO will catch up soon.

If you're a serious number-cruncher, you may want to look at Gnumeric.
Not as polished as Excel or OO Calc, but for pure spartan spreadsheet functionality, many find it preferable.

    Hello,
If you wanna crunch numbers, try Freemat or Octave.

Is there any particular reason why OO doesn't have an outlook lookalike ?
I know that I can get another e-mail program and then just add a diary/todo but
I do really like having my task list "next" to me e-mail - old habits

A further question re Open Office - would it be possible to use Dragon NaturallySpeaking ( preferred v 8.1 for now ) with Open Office?

My hands are virtually useless & degenerating so Voice control is vital for current & future use of PC. I'm looking for as many Open Source Apps that will work with Dragon as possible as work is unfortunately not an option so funds are very limited...

    Hello,
I have found reviews both pro and con.
I suggest you should simply try... and see how it goes.

    Thanks Mrkvonic

Think I'll wait till I've done a bit more training on Dragon User Files, back them up & the PC to the Ext HDD & then give it a go.

    Appreciate the rapid reply

Left MS Office after version 2002, got bloated and Outlook wont go out of memory, switched to OO since version 1 and never looked back.

Well, it's not so much number-crunching but rather charting where I find Excel better. But I think improvements for this area are planned for version 2.3, so we won't have to wait very long.
