HIPS

Hi.
I'm thinking of installing HIPS on my system. Would you recommend any product (both free and paid) that I might consider installing?

For Vista theres not many HIPS anyways, but heres some:

ProSecurity (beta)

I like the first two because theyre quiet.

Has a HIPS component, 32bit Vista only. Suggest downloading the 2nd version down, 4.35Mb, ie: without the toolbar/WSG, but that's just my personal preference as I don't use extra toolbars. + it's a smaller download.

 

If you want something simple but effective then defensewall is excellent.

actually if used properly i think prosecurity is one of the quitest HIPS around. The key is its learning mode, which can be switched on and off at will from the taskbar icon. This prevents all the popups that normally come about. It also helps that its protection is quite good, as confirmed by nicm's tests.

 

It's learning mode is good.
Mine isn't.
Very good product but occasionally I have felt, with the pop up box showing different flavors of permission, that I should have never plugged in my pc.
I guess I'll just keep plugging away.

 

I can recommand Prosecurity wich is one of the best in his category...

 

Also SUPERB is OnlineArmor (OA). In terms of GRRREAT support (available, friendly, fast, helpful, competent) I must say that OA is head & shoulders above its competitors.

Also the OA support forum & user community are simply wonderful.

 

Online Armor is excellent, but unfortunately it's not yet Vista compatible.

 

More and more people are talking about ThreatFire. Is it really that good? Is it final, or still in beta?

 

Its currently beta.

 

I use XP Pro w/SP2.
Is Defensewall Plus a higher level HIPS than Defensewall or are these 2 completely different types of protection.

You mean DefencePlus?

They are different programs; DefencePlus is meant to protect against buffer overflows.

Once you use the Rules Generator Wizard, Pro Security is very quiet. Then there is the Learning Mode and Installing Mode that are used separately and are very effective for when installing new applications.

On Vista32 I would opt for ThreatFire free (ThreatFire Pro is in its Beta, free is old CyberHawk Pro, so the 'Beta' status of the free is really testing how the new code of the pro version fits in).

For additional HIPS for containing threagates, you could try GeSWall free (policy management sandbox configured for one threatgate, pais is for all others) or Returnil free (virtualisation sandbox). I agree with others DefenseWall (paid) is an excellent choice (also policy mgt sandbox)

Would absolutely agree with this statement. HAs replaced Process Guard in my arsenal and does the job...plain and simple without blinding you with technology.

 

SSM (beta) and ProSecurity (beta) noisy or frequently?
so far as i can see,they are cute that i liked for past the half year.

 

That is not my experience with ProSecurity 1.3 if you have run the rules wizard and using learning mode for a reasonable amount of time during which you carry out the actions that you normally do day-to-day, which is what is recommended by the author/developer.

 

DefenseWall and ThreatFire are the ones that suit me the most. Now, I only need to decide which one I should keep.
