This is about your verification failure rate.

I hope you get the information you seek from your two polls. I am sorry that I and I imagine several others cannot help you because we do not run or see the need to run validations ever.

After running an image backup I swap out my current HDD for one from a previous day and then run a restore. I continue with this HDD until the next backup is run etc, etc.

I have had some restores fail, apparently from corrupt images, over the last 18 months or so. During this time I have run TI V8,9, and 10. The actual failure rate works out at< 0.5% over several hundred restores. I have done various tests to establish a cause but it is like chasing a Will-O-The Whisp. In any case as I never overwrite a live drive it is of no great consequnce at all.

I was a very lucky ATI-user during one year.
Never verification failures and always a successfull restoration and I did MANY restorations.

Please, could you specify your backup & validation process?

    • To where do you backup (internal HD, external HD, CD, etc.)
    • Run TI from desktop or TI boot CD?
    • Validate with backup or separate operation?

I decided I would post why I started this poll (other than it's good info for all TI users).

At home, where I am using TI Home 10, I do monthly file backups and drive image backup every 3mths. File backups are for C: & D: (done individually) and the image is for HDD0 = C: & D: partitions. My other drives are mostly for games and I can reinstall them if need be. C: = System, WinXP Pro SP2, D: = Apps (incl My Documents, and all the other applications I use including TI).

I backup to an external Firewire hard drive. There's just not enough space anywhere else. I normally run TI from the hard drive, but I've tried using the TI boot CD and running it from there.

Here's the verification problems I'm having:
    • File backups - if I include any Recycle folder or System Volume Information folder, I get 100% failure
    • Image backups - I get 85% failure rate when using the hard drive & 50% the few times I used DVDs

So, I would appreciate hints from people, especially those that never have verification failures.

Also, on the validation error report, just what are Tags? What are tags showing? Can someone tell me?

:thumbd: The TI validation process is the one thing I see as falling short of every other backup utility I have used (Veritas, Ghost, NERO's BackItUp, Win Backup {aka NTBackup.exe}). All these utilities verify the entire backup then give you a report at the end, sometimes a text log. TI validation stops at the fist error then give you the cryptic Tag. Just how are we to know exactly what the problem is from a Tag?! It could be an unimportant file that we would not need to restore. Example, NTBackup always reports a problem which is its own backup log. Of course the log will be different than the one backed up because it gets updated after the backup completes.

The best backup verification I have seen is Veritas. The text log includes a list of every file scanned and backed up, which were skipped (in use), and TA-DA a list of files that generated errors. We use Veritas at work for our Fileserver and have never had a failure.

I never had a flawed verification notice from TI10.

Strangely upon restore a corrupted copy can result anyway ( the corruption rate is around 50 percent when using TI10 to backup to DVD's [ I've tried different DVD media with the same results]). Perhaps it is time to upgrade to TI11.

I also experienced a corrupt copy from the slave HD where the image was stored again with no problems with verification. This has been the only corrupted copy from the slave drive, which is pretty good odds in my view.
