ActiveX kill bit in the reg.

What common security app's likely to keep inserting kill bit in the registry in MS IE compatability flag, that keeps stopping install of Flash Player - guesses, anyone?

I have that turned off in Spywareblaster; don't think it's Spywaresweeper, but I wonder is there a setting perhaps in Spybot doing this?

Keep finding/deleting flag in reg., and it keeps coming back. Had read about this problem on Adobe site, and found it.

Used Adobe uninstaller, to del. old versions of Flash, changed settings (properly, I think) in IE but just no luck with it.

 

Spybot immunisation sets some ActiveX kill bits. Try undoing the immunisation and see if that clears the problem. If so, you may be able to disable just that section of immunisations by switching to Spybot version 1.5 (which is in beta at the release candidate stage) and turning that section off from the immunisation list, so that you can still use the other immunisations available in Spybot.

Thanks for reply, & info; while I almost never use IE, I did want to get Flash for it, but it works fine in Firefox and Opera, so I'd best stick with those I reckon.

Come to think of it, do any settings is IE, affect one's PC in general or overall? Don't want to mess with it too far, in the "allowing" of this and that if it may harm security measures.

 

I would make sure all Flash is gone for ALL browsers. (The removal tool is here http://kb.adobe.com/selfservice/viewContent.do?externalId=tn_14157&sliceId=2 )

Then, go to filehippo and grab the latest versions as direct .exe files, not downloads from Adobe (which seem to have issues for many users.)
IE Version http://filehippo.com/download_flashplayer_ie/
Non-IE Version http://filehippo.com/download_flashplayer_firefox/

This is what I do and have had excellent luck...

If the Adobe uninstaller fails to remove everything, go to C:\WINDOWS\system32\Macromed\Flash and see what is in there. After the uninstaller runs, that folder should be empty. If it's not empty, you might list what's in there.

It could also have something to do with Microsoft's KB913433 Windows Update. http://support.microsoft.com/kb/913433 If this update is installed, you cannot uninstall all flash versions. It won't let you. To get 913433 off your PC, you have to remove it via the regular Add/Remove Programs control panel.
