Looking for a replacement for NOD32

I will not be renewing my NOD32 subscription at the end of this year. My thought is to give Avira Antivir Personal Edition Classic a try. I want to explore several options and have a few months to do so.

Is Avira Antivir a competent replacement?

Also, most programs install with a certain set of default settings. Are the default settings good enough with this program or could they be tweaked to provide protection equivalent to "Blackspears Nod32 settings"?

 

I have both of them, one on my regular computer and one on my laptop.
The truth of the matter is that Avira has much better detection and heuristics
but some complain about it's FP's (even though I've had only one since I started using it).

 

Antivir Classic lacks a few features from the Premium version such as pop3 scanning and spyware definitions so it wont be as complete, but it is a fine replacement.

Did you install with standard settings or tweak for advanced settings?

 

Avira Antivir is a very good choice. I've switched to it from NOD32 too, and I'm very happy with it. Its detection rates are higher and it's almost as light as NOD32.

 

there is less problems with nod32.
my sister has had the updater brake on antivir quite a few times.
and it tries to update when she logs on and cant because it hasnt got a connection yet.
and since the sedular isnt working the hourly update job doesnt work.
it worked fine to start with but now it doesnt.
so do a trial first to see if it works on your computer.

I am with you on this. Tried to stay with Avira Premium but the update problem kept nagging me and this one I could not abide. Update must be more stable on my AV if I am going to trust no matter how high its detection rate is. So, back to NOD32 for me for now.

im someone agrees with me
i managed to get a cheap 3 user license for kis7.0 so thats what is going on my sisters laptop when antivir expiers.
so i would advice the OP to try for a while first.
if not stay with nod32 or even try example bitdefender,kav etc.

I have enjoyed KIS7 also but the most trouble free set-and-forget AV that I have used to date is NOD32. Second is KIS 7.

amen when using nod32 on my test pc there wasnt a single issue.
but i havent had any problems with kis7.0
but had some issues with failed lanch of kis6.0

I am still running a 6 month trial of Avira Premium on my main PC, after having tried KIS 6 and NOD2.7.

I initially had some problems with Avira's update process (about which I bitched and complained quite a bit). But it has been updating fine for some months now. The problem for me seemed to relate to certain key files that only require updating with a major update of the software - general virus definition updates seem to go through regularly without a problem.

I have experienced a problem with Internet Explorer 7 favourites losing their URLs - which someone here suggested might be caused by Avira. I can't say whether that is true or not, but it's been happening often enough to be quite annoying.

Apart from that, Avira is top notch and is a contender for my dollars.

 

I think AntiVir is a good replacement for Nod also.. Either that or KAV... I am just a little annoyed with the updating (AntiVir) at times, aside from that, it's a great choice...

 

I believe in this case there is a top three as people here mention.
NOD32, KAV7 and Avira in no specific order.

You need to try them all to see what it will do on your PC. Also very important visit their forum to see what the support is like.

Hi besafe, If your looking for a free AV, Avira PE or Avast are both fine. I have used Avast and it is rock solid and a very complete program. Just this week I switched to Avira PE for a try and I did experience an update problem Friday. I update manually through the tray icon. Either AV should provide good detection for free if that is what you need. Now, I'm off to check the link that WSFuser gave .

Avira (aka Antivir), formerly by "H+BEDV Datentechnik" (founded in 1986) was first released
in 1988,
as was avast! by Alwil Software.

Grisoft (AVG) was founded in 1991, FRisk of f-Prot fame, in 1993, while Kaspersky Labs exists since 1997 (fine job for that short time!)

The "really coolest" thing about f-prot is that it's from Iceland...

Antivir/Avira was one of the first really professional antivirus proggies for IBM PC's, if not the first. (Most viruses at those early times, though, might have rather affected the Commodore Amiga Home Computer e.a. than the PC, in fact..., via the disk copying epidemy)

Oldies but goldies...

Good to see that 2 of the oldest proggies from Germany and Czechia do offer the results of their ancient experience for free nowadays!

And, in case some of you don't know: if you are embarrassed by the "Nag Screen" during some updates, just disallow avgnotify.exe with PG or a similar prog. It will enhance your connecting while updating, and it will look more professional

 

Sometimes I use the default settings and sometimes I like to play around with them. Both ways I haven't encountered any problems.

 

Today i switched from Nod32 to avast... I couldn't really decide between avast and avira but I chose the first for now and i will try avira sometime in the future. I absolutely love nod and i am definetely goona buy a license when version 3 comes out but till then I will stick to a free AV. Avast seems fine for now!
