    hi there,

Where do I find in Trend Micro or Zone Alarm the settings that deal with cookies? Please help! Thank you.

    background info:

i recently started having a problem where I would have to log-in again to forums (such as this one) after every shutdown.

i haven't installed anything new so there shouldn't be a problem there.

running Explorer 6.0.x, Windows XP SP2, (free) Zone Alarm 6.1.x, Trend Micro 15 (Internet Security 2007)

In Explorer, I tried Tools>Internet Options>Privacy and moving the bar to "Accept All Cookies". Reboot and still same problem.

I think there's a "delete all private data" option in trend micro, under teh spyware tab I think? I haven't used trend for about 6 months, so I don't really remember sorry.

I think under zonealarm go to privacy options and there should be a option to delete cookies, internet cache after computer startup. I am not using zonealarm right now so i can't give exact instructions.

I don't know what browser you are using but most browsers have this option as well

I don't think the others who posted actually read your post. They seem to think you WANT to delete cookies from sites where you login.

I have not used TrendMicro since 2003 so I can't help with it and ZA I had way back when it was still in beta and no one had heard of software firewalls. But I haven't had it in years either.

I have periodically had the problem you describe on Firefox. It drives me nuts. It doesn't always affect all forums ...usually just some where I try to stay always logged in. All of a sudden, the cookies that should be permanent ones show as session only and there is no way for me to force them to be permanent like they should be. IE6 has the same problem sometimes. The problem appears out of nowhere suddenly.

You can see in IE if this is what is happening. Instead of using the slider, click Custom and then on the Custom page click Advanced. Then under Cookies put a check mark in the box to override automatic cookie handling. Under first party cookies check "prompt". Under third party cookies check "block" (third party cookies should always be blocked...never accept those). Leave the box about ALWAYS accept session cookies BLANK.

Now go to one of your sites that you have to keep logging in on and when IE puts a prompt box on your screen as you login and asks you what do with the cookie be sure to leave "apply this to all cookies from this site" BLANK and click on "more information" and you can see if the cookie is permanent or session only. Let IE ask you about each cookie at your site where you are having the problem. Some of the cookies may be supposed to be session only but at least one and maybe more are supposed to be permanent. If IE says all of them are session only cookies then you have this weird problem I get sometimes. Nothing fixes it. It fixes itself eventually.

There are 5 cookies here at Wilders and only bbsessionhash is a session only cookie. The other 4 are permanent. But with IE, you can't really tell there are 4 cookies...so while what i described is very helpful in Fx, it is not as much so in IE once the cookie is set as when you use Explorer and go look at the cookie you don't get near the amount of information about it as you do in Fx. Still, if you temporarily set IE like I said IE will before the cookie(s) is/are set will show you that extra information. You just can't look at that later after the cookie is set. In Fx you can, at any time, look and see all the extra information like permanent or session and exactly how many cookies are set, etc. Firefox has the best cookie handling of all browsers.

FWIW, I never use the slider in IE. I use the custom settings as I described for you to use as a test. IE set as I described will ask you the first time it goes to a site where the site wants to set cookies and you can approve each cookie or you can check the box "apply this action (accept/do not accept) to all cookies at this site" and IE will never ask you again about that site. It will remember that you want to always block cookies at that site or always accept all cookies. (If you manually clear all cookies then it will ask you again of course). It is a better way to handle cookies IMO.

In zonealarm, there should be cache cleaner under privacy tab, which can clean "all" cookies "if" configured properly. It can clean IE and Netscape cookies as far as i know.

Mele20: thanks for the write-up. I'll try what you said. much mahalo. By the way, I'm hoping to visiti the Aloha State next year! :)

ashishtx: I don't have a Privacy tab in ZoneAlarm!?

I have: Overview, Firewall, Program Control, Anti-Virus Monitoring, E-mail Protection, Alerts & Logs

Weird. Maybe the version I have is not suppose to have a Privacy tab? I clicked on all the tabs and it doesn't look like it's a submenu either.

If you have free version of Zonealarm than most probably that feature is disabled. If you are using the Pro version than it should be there. Anyone using zonealarm pro version 6.X.X please throw some light on this issue. Problem is, I don't have any system with XP or 2000 otherwise i could have tried it myself.

Firefox, Tools, Options; Privacy and Cookies Tab.

I have a check in box for "Allow sites to set cookies" and default on "Exceptions".

For "Keep cookies" select "Ask me every time" and have never 'cleared cookies'.

This allows selection of deny/allow as well as keep or clear on close. Usually select to clear-on-close unless it might be needed again.

Never have log-in problems and ewido scans always show no cookie threats.

I do that too in Firefox. But what does what we do in Fx have to do with the OP's problem? The OP is using Internet Explorer 6.0. IE 6 can be made in Custom settings under the Privacy tab to deal with cookies much like Fx does but not quite the same and the OP said he was using the slider in IE so how Fx handles cookies is useful only if the OP decides to try Fx.
