What is your security setup these days?

I agree that for most AV+FW is probably the best compromise. I ran both between 1996 and 2006 and then began to wonder what was going on as I never found anything more threatening than cookies or false positives. If you found 70 nasties in 4 months then I can see why you run protection.

In a sense I don't really run without an AV - my mail is checked before delivery and new programs are only installed on test machines before deployment.

Every few weeks I load one of the many free programs and check, find nothing, reboot and get back to work.

 

For most average surfers there aren't real dangers, if they are safe surfers. In my situation people plug in their memory stick to show me stuff, and most of their computers are infected (you can't imagine how many people are happily infected in this world, and they don't even know they are).

I've always been warned by Nod (in other words HIPS, AntiSpyware, Anti trojan never manage to be quicker than Nod). Last but not least I have gmail, which seems to be the best in filtering incoming mail (IMO).

Simple YES or NO question....

Running Kaspersky equals better TROJAN protection than most other AV's. Though that may be true, would you still add BOClean or NO? I mean I run it, never has flagged anything, just there sitting in the sideline wasting a few resources. I am sure KAV's TROJAN list is good enough compared to BOClean. Some people around here ran BOClean for a while, then removed it, seems they didn't find it useful.

Would you run BOClean while having KAV?

I was a big fan of BoClean before it was bought by the other company, I forgot the name now...
Then I started having problems of update, so I removed it from my computer.(Update problems has been fix now)

IMHO with the Antivirus we have today KAV, NOD, etc.I don't see any good reason to run BoClean anymore. But some other poeple will have different opinions and that's fine.

 

Yeah I know about opinions, we all hold our own. Anyways, the theory in the past was, KAV or Nod32 + BOClean. I actually bought BOClean when it was at 4.22 a few months before Comodo bought it out. I have been using it ever since, the Comodo versions though, but I had Nod32 then. I think in reality, I felt ripped off by paying for it, then getting it free, so thats why I kept using the newer version one even though I now run KAV. Always use an updated version I say, but anyway now that I think about it, do I need BOCLean, some other users here had it too and removed it, maybe I should do the same.

On my laptop I am using KIS 7. I do not think I need to run anything else real time, but I do run scans with AVGAS or SAS from time to time. Nothing of consequence is ever found, but only a couple of traces.

On my desktop I use KAV 7, and like to run something like AVGAS or SAS alongside it. Since I never get infected or seldom even alerted, I could get by with only KAV. i can remember only 3 times in about 8 years I was alerted to a real threat, and the AV caught and removed it, and the AT/AS never let out a peep. I have never been confident that one is needed, but I have lifetime licenses for a couple so I run them at various times.

If you are running only KAV or another AV I would probably run BoClean if I liked that application. It would just be another layer that so far I have found unneeded.

I have been a Mcafee Internet Security Suite user for the last few years and finally decided to scrap it.

My new setup is:

Antivirus: Nod32
Firewall: Router (hardware) and Outpost Firewall Pro (software)
Antispyware: Webroot Spy Sweeper

I also use Acronis True Image Home as a backup.

Can anyone recommend changes that i could make to this setup to improve it?

 

It is widely reported that Spy Sweeper really slows a system down. You might trial Counterspy or SuperAntiSpyware. I don't believe you would lose anything protection wise.

I do extensive beta testing and change frequently after RTM, but I've found that the KAV product allows for more D/L and U/L speeds - I don't know why and I'm not going to question it!

 

I changed my setup slightley. I now use

Antivirus: Nod32 (real time protection), Kaspersky (weekly scans)
Firewall: Router (hardware) and Outpost Firewall Pro (software)
Antispyware: Spybot S&D, Spyware Blaster

Am i right in believing this is an almost impenetrable defense?
