Approximately 1 month old installation of Spybot 1.4 on XP sp2 laptop machine. Have used Spybot in the past, but only with Windows 2000 sp4 and less. Have always used the update feature included within the program.

    Tea-timer is on.

When I update Spybot 1.4 on my XP "limited user" account I do not get any obvious errors, but the only update it finds is a Main skins update from 1/28/05. I have always refused to download the Main skins update so that does not surprise me. However, I happened to go onto the official Spybot website and found a Detection update for 07/25/07 available. I downloaded the executable file from the website and installed the update. Now my Spybot shows that as the "Latest detection update: 2007-07-25", but why did Spybot not find that update when I used update from within the program itself?

Which update server from the pulldown list are you using?
Granted, it shouldn't make a difference - but it does. I've encountered the same thing before, and ever since using the X-Teq (Germany) server, I haven't had any update issues since.
I only use Spybot S&D on-demand for the XP box though; in the Settings menu on the left, I don't have any of the boxes checked under "Web update" - I just update manually.

Thankyou for responding coolbluewater. I am not getting any specific error message(s) I just expected Spybot to find some new updates once I clicked on Search for Updates in the main Update screen on the right.

However, I have clicked "Search for Updates" many times consecutively recently and I did notice that the program automatically switches to a new update server each time I click "Search for Updates" so I have tried almost all of the update servers.

I aslo followed your advice and specifically chose X-Teq (Germany) update server, but Spybot still found no new updates other than the main skins that I mentioned in the post that began this thread.

I guess Spybot's makers just have not made the new detection update(2007-07-25) that I found and installed from their website available via the Update servers that Spybot itself accesses when a user "Searches for Updates". There have been times in the past when it seems that Spybot's maker(s) slow down on the available updates.

Maybe I got a little impatient. The last updates that I downloaded through Spybot itself were on 07/11/2007.

Incidentally, in the past, on other machines(OS), Spybot has found updates that did not download. I believe the error was "bad checksum". After some considerable time I discovered that just switching to a different update server usually resulted in a successful download of the updates. But, again, I am getting no error message(s), specific or otherwise, in this case.

I was also getting the "bad checksum" messages from S&D, but have never gotten any since using the X-Teq server.

My XP box is always run at Admin-level; I'm the only one using it and I mostly use it for offline gaming.
Kudos to Wilders for the "Update Alerts" sub-forum, since when I see an update for a program I'll think to myself "yeah, I have that" and update it.
Mostly because I keep updated images once a month (gotta make sure those saved games don't get lost), as I really don't scan my XP box that much or use it online (except to get updates to keep my images updated).

Thanks coolbluewater. I was not aware of the "Update Alerts" sub-forum. It does sound like a handy resource. I'll go stick my nose in to see what I can find. What OS are you using online?

Looks like I'll have to make a mental note of that X-Teq server.

    You're welcome.
I usually use Linux or another *nix variant.
