XP->Vista switch - Expectations

Hi there,
I'm in the meanwhile to swap my "old" notebook, to a newer on and wondering what could I expect from that switch.

Current lappy sports a Pentium M 1.6GhZ with 512MB RAM and XP + NOD32 2.7 + Comodo Firewall. In this scenario NOD slows just a little disk activity, and Comodo uses quite CPU.

The new lappy has a Core Duo 2 7500 CPU + 4GB RAM and I'll probabily throw in NOD. Vista has some security features built in. Should I rely on it's firewall, until Comodo will be certified for Vista?

Other thoughts?

 

I can't answer your last question but you gonna drive a super ferrari,i think this thingy is way too fast for your brains and eyes to accomodate !!

Nevertheless I'm thinking if Vista's firewall (One Care?) is good enough or crap.

I've read some articles quite nasty about Vista.....

 

Vista's firewall, like the XP Firewall, is good enough for inbound protection. Dont know about its outbound protection though.

If you have 32-bit Vista, you can also try LooknStop firewall or the Eset Security Suite beta.

 

What you can expect with vista: Lower battery life (assuming u keep aero on, it'll lower battery life by about 45 minutes), a lot nicer eye candy (it rlly grows on you), a HUGE install (if u use vlite u can change this), lower performance (depends how you tweak vista of course, and performance grows over time as superfetch gets used to your system), and random applications you can't remove (some of them are nice applications, it's just that you probably won't need them all). The search function will also be pretty fast if you keep indexing on (at the cost of overall performance). Security is a toss up, on the one hand there aren't that many viruses for vista right now, but the security applicaitons for vista right now are rather weak. I'd take commodo alpha over the vista firewall.
