NoteBurner is the one I am using.

it uses virtual drive to burn virtual audio CD-RW disc. After burning, DRM is removed. But this program does not bypass DRM and you need to input license password of iTunes music if want to purchased iTunes music.

it always works well.

 

I suspect Foobar 2000 (+ LAME) could do it: Hydrogenaudio Forums - Support (fb2k) - converting mp4/m4a to mp3
You should definitely not have to buy programs to do this. Here's a good place to search for codecs

 

I am using noteburner too, and I also like to use foobar2000.
I found i can use noteburner with foobar2000, just download foobar2000's cd support plug-in. Noteburner is Great!!!!
