A friend of mine has a new HP with Vista and so far has been happy with it, but has run into an issue. She has a database which has multiple directories and about 13000 files. Total size is around 250MB. All efforts to move the files to CD result in times of 3 hours or so. Time on an older XP system was way less.

Has anyone seen this kind of behavior and a cause.

You mean a speed decrease in access and reading of the hard drive? Nope I never seen that on VISTA. I transfer stuff within my raid's and also my USB 2.0 external and no noticeable behavior like that. That behavior sounds like an antivirus scanning all the files first or something.

Vista has slower file copy times. Noticeably slower. Can't say if this is common on all systems but Microsoft intends to address this specific issue in SP1 for Vista.

Well it might be hardware independent because my XP and VISTA file copy times are about the same give or take a few.

Certainly not anywhere near the same on my machine. It looks like the MS fix may just be for network copies. However if you want evidence that it's a common problem (which I happen to have on my underspecced E6600, 4GB of dual channel, quad raptor, 7900GTO love machine) then check out this thread http://forums.microsoft.com/TechNet/ShowPost.aspx?PostID=1358057&SiteID=17 where the first Microsoft staffer responds saying

or google "file copy slow vista" and see how many threads you can find. More threads than Vista can handle :D

Vista has three annoying issues IMHO:

    1. PAT/Memory Remap being poorly implemented and causing problems with hardware (usually TV Cards)
    2. Slow file copy
    3. Audio subsystem so crippled with DRM it effects fidelity

TV cards are indeed a problem and so is the DRM stuff, but hey not arguing, my xp is faster than vista in all the other areas.

    Hi Guys

Hey, thanks so much for the replies. Gads, I think I am so glad I've stayed away. My friend has the copy problem, and I noticed the audio quality was much poorer on my system when I install vista, even with the new drivers. Grrr.

Anyway again thanks for the replies.
